6 Ways to Snack Smarter

Health Tips
Last Updated Aug 21, 2020

Choose snacks wisely.  But, as hard as you try and as much effort you put into eating healthy snacks, many foods just aren't.  They may promise the world, but are quite opaque in their delivery. The hidden ingredients in potentially healthy snacks are sugar, salt and unhealthy fats. Examples of these are:

  • Cereal bars
  • Bran muffins
  • Muesli
  • Labels saying "fat free".  These are often dripping with sugar in order to replace the fat.

The following are examples of tips for healthy snacking:

Go for the grain

Whole grain contains additional fibre that will help regulate your blood sugar levels throughout the day.  Adding a healthy fat and a protein to your snack will hold back those hunger pangs

Bring back that breakfast

Breakfast can halt those hunger pangs later on in the morning thus stopping you snacking on high sugary foods in order to stop that craving

Go nuts

Unsalted nuts and seeds make very nutritious snacks. The beneficial nutrients that they provide are more likely to keep you full, thus steering you away from those sugars

Snack mindfully

Be mindful when you eat. Stop what you are doing and sit for a few minutes enjoying your nutritious snack.

Think ahead

Carry a small bag of healthful goodies with you on your journeys.  This way you won't be tempted by the wrong foods when you start to get peckish.

Fresh fruit

Bananas come in their own disposable carry bag.  Bananas are a great energy refuelling food packed with amazing nutrients.  However, any fruit will do.  Easy to throw into your bag on your way out.

It really doesn't take a lot of preparation work to make healthy and wholesome snacks.  With very little planning, you go go a long way on your journey to healthier, adventurous snacks that will support better nutrition and longevity.
