Acid and Alkaline Promoting Foods

The diet you eat will impact your health greatly. Many diseases can be avoided by ensuring you have the right diet consisting of wholefoods and less processed foods. Getting the right diet and understanding the impact certain foods will have on your body is the first step to achieving optimal health.

The internal environment of our bodies is maintained at a pH balance of 7.0 with 14 being the most alkaline and 0 being the most acidic.  At 7.0 your internal environment is therefore alkaline.  Maintenance of this state is based upon external environments such as food and stress and both certain foods and stress will produce an acidic environmental.  In order for necessary bodily reactions and functions to occur efficiently, your body must be in optimal health; the 7.0 alkaline balance being one of the instigators of health.  

When an alkaline balance is maintained in the body the normal functions such as the metabolic, immunologic, enzymatic and the repair mechanisms are at their best.  When the body is in the alkaline state then the acid forming stressors on the body occur, such as inflammation.  High fat and high protein foods can easily be neutralised by the mineral-buffering reserves that are present in the alkaline state.

Alkalising Food Plan

Most vegetables and fruits contain a higher amount of alkaline forming elements than other foods thus promoting a more alkaline environment in the body. A diet that is predominantly alkaline forming is important in the maintenance of sustained health.

Changing your diet to a healthier one can be difficult.  Instead of giving up many of your favourite acid forming foods for good you can develop a plan that lets you eat some of your less than healthy foods; by increasing your alkaline promoting foods, you can neutralize the potentially toxic acid created by the acid forming foods such as:

  • Dairy
  • Meat
  • Lentils
  • White bread
  • Butter
  • Oats
  • Peanuts
  • Hotdog
  • Eggs
  • Bagels

If you don't want to give up on these foods altogether, it is important to offset it with an alkaline food at each setting.

Breakfast

Eggs (acid promoting) scrambled with a green leafy vegetable (alkaline forming) served with half a grapefruit (alkaline forming)

Lunch

Salad with green leafy veges (alkaline forming) served with some meat (acid forming) dressed with a homemade avo and lemon dressing (alkaline forming)

Dinner

Salmon patty (low acid forming) served with vegetables (alkaline forming)
