Last Updated Sep 14, 2020

Carob is a great chocolate impersonator! It is notorious for its high nutrient content.  As long as there is no added fat or sugar, the hype is true – it is actually quite nutritious.  Over the years, the taste has improved dramatically from its bitter (and somewhat indigestible) counterpart of the 70’s and 90’s. Not only is it delicious, research shows that carob is rich in a variety of nutrients including antioxidants.

What is Carob?

Carob is a legume that grows on trees. The pods from the carob tree are ground up to make a powder used for the transformation into a rich, chocolate-like substance.

Carob and Antioxidant

Polyphenols are compounds found in carob and act as antioxidants. These protect your body from damage from free radicals as well as from environmental pollutants.

Carob and Blood Cholesterol Levels

Research shows that these polyphenols have a positive effect on cholesterol levels. These potent compounds can contribute to the oxidisation of LDL’s (bad cholesterol) as well as the increase of HDL’s (good cholesterol).  When LDS’s are oxidised it can become attached to the artery walls and may cause coronary heart disease.
