Good nutrition is essential for everyone of all ages, but is especially important for you as a developing teenager.  As adolescence is a critical period of fast paced growth and development, an intake of the correct nutrients to support this growth is vital.

During adolescence, the need for nutrients such as minerals, nutrients, protein, good fats all increase.  Appetite will also increase during the growth period; it is therefore of utmost importance that good food choices are make.  It can be very tempting to go the easy route and snack on foods that are high in sugar, salt and unhealthy fats.  Make it easier for your child to be able to snack on fruits, veges and healthy home baked muffins and cookies with minimal sugar and maximum nutrition.

Special Concerns for You

Teenagers grow and develop at different rates and sometimes it may be hard to come to terms with a changing and growing body.  Some teenagers might develop unrealistic goals and expectations on the how they are ‘meant’ to look. Professional help should be sought should this become an issue.
Being overweight or underweight are both of equal concerns nutritionally. A healthy diet will meet all the nutritional needs of your teenager.

Choosing a Healthy Diet

Adolescents should aim to enjoy a healthy diet and consume a wide range of whole foods.  These include:

  • Vegetables of different varieties and colours
  • Pulses such as legumes and beans
  • Fruits of different varieties and colours
  • Whole grain foods such as brown rice, oats, cous cous, brown pasta
  • Meats
  • Fish
  • Poultry
  • Dairy products
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Eggs
  • Water
  • Limit intake of processed foods, sugar, salt and highly saturated fats.

Eating Tips to Improve You:

  • Limit sugary drinks and soft drinks.  Sugar free drinks are still just as unhealthy and acidic and can have a negative effect on bone and dental health.  Water is the healthiest drink.  You can try a slice of lemon, mint, orange or lime for a bit of extra added taste
  • It is important to eat breakfast everyday so that you are not lurking around the pantry desperate to fill that gap with high sugar foods.  If you eat a breakfast, you’re less likely to snack on junk food at morning tea
  • It is important not to skip lunch to dinner.  Rather, eat food that is delicious as well as nutritious
  • Don’t add salt to your food
  • Try the option of healthier takeaway shops with your friends.
