What is the zika virus?

You have no doubt heard alarming reports in the news about the zika virus. Question is – what is it, and do we need to be worried in Australia?

Zika virus under the microscope

Simply, the zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-transmitted infection. It’s similar in many ways to dengue and yellow fever, and is spreading quickly in areas where the aedes mosquito is prevalent.

It’s been around since 1947, when it was discovered in monkeys In Uganda. There have been a few small outbreaks since. And in 2015, it became clear that ZIKV was on the brink of an outbreak across the Caribbean and South America.

What are the symptoms of zika virus?

Around one in five people with ZIKV will get sick. A few days after being bitten by an infected mozzie, they will start to develop:

  •     Fever
  •     Dizziness
  •     Headaches
  •     Sore joints and muscles
  •     Rash
  •     Conjunctivitis (red eye)

Unlike its more severe relatives like dengue fever, ZIKV has only mild symptoms that clear up on their own in around a week.

Is zika virus curable?

Scientists are scrambling to find a vaccine for ZIKV. But at this stage, health experts can only recommend lots of rest, plenty of fluids, and seeing your doctor to ensure there are no complications with your current medication.

The best way to avoid contracting ZIKV is to prevent mosquito bites (by wearing DEET insect repellant and loose, long clothing) and avoid areas where ZIKV is on a rampage such as Central and South America, and several Caribbean islands. You can view a list of ZIKV travel notices here.

Should we be worried about ZIKV?

Pregnant women should take extra precautions, as ZIKV has been shown to cause birth defects and brain damage. You may need to amend your travel plans if you are pregnant or planning to be pregnant during your time overseas.

If you’re concerned, speak with your healthcare advisor.
