About Osteopathy
Osteopathy is a form of manual medicine founded by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still in the United States and dates back to the 1870’s. Osteopathy is a holistic approach to the human body that uses a wide range of techniques and principles to treat the musculo-skeletal system and other functional disorders of the body. However Osteopathic belief is not confined to only bones and muscles. It encompasses all the inter-relationships of the body's systems, thus bringing together all the pieces of a puzzle to diagnose and treat the whole person. The Osteopathic approach aims to return the body to optimal mobility and health by addressing the cause of the problem and not just the presenting signs and symptoms.
The main aim of Osteopathic treatment is to restore normal function to the whole body, so you can benefit from Osteopathic treatment for any ailment you may be experiencing. Treatment is not a ‘cure' or a quick-fix. Treatment assists your body to achieve its optimum health so it will be better able to deal with the problems it is experiencing.
Osteopathy is possibly the most complete of the modern day manual therapies. Osteopaths pride themselves on their hands-on approach to the human body and our treatment methods are considered among the safest and most effective forms of complementary medicine.
A typical Osteopathic treatment will include a comprehensive case history, examination and hands-on treatment. Techniques may include soft tissue, gentle joint manipulation and articulation, stretching and ligament balancing techniques. All techniques aim to restore balance and function to the body allowing healing to occur quickly.
As Osteopathy encompasses the whole body, your consultation will finish with advice to help you further manage your condition. This may include stretches, postural advice, workplace ergonomics, rehabilitation exercises and dietary advice.
The gentle, holistic approach of Osteopathy makes it suitable to treat people of all age groups including infants, children, teenagers, pregnant women, adults, athletes, the elderly and many more.

Dr. Catherine Spiteri B.App.Sc(Comp. Med), Masters of Osteopathy, M.A.O.A
Dr. Catherine Spiteri graduated with distinction from RMIT University after 5 years of Osteopathic training. She has spent her last two years practicing at Box Hill Osteopaty, having joined the 213 Osteopathy team in August 2010.
Catherine enjoys treating people of all ages and conditions. She uses all different types of techniques during treatment, ranging from gentle cranial techniques to stronger direct methods such as soft tissue massage and manipulation. Both patient preference and their response to treatment help indicate which techniques best suit each individual. With a keen interest in the biodynamic cranial model, she has completed several cranial courses and already has plans to do more in the future.
She is particularly interested in paediatric as well as the closely related obstetric osteopathy. She believes that there is a great need to ensure our young friends are able to bounce back from things such as a traumatic birth, playground injury or childhood illness – so that they continue to grow and develop into healthy young adults. Similarly, osteopathic care of pregnant women can help provide welcome relief as their bodies continually compensate and respond to the babies growth.
Outside of work, Catherine looks forward to walking, and sometimes even attempted jogging! And when time permits, lounging around with a good home cooked meal and great friends is a must.

By combining Osteopathic treatment and Pilates training, Emily is working with local football teams to help improve their injury management and prevention, including conditions such as osteitis pubis, and recurrent hamstring and calf strains. Combing Pilates with her sports training experience and osteopathic skills, Dr. Mankey is able to use this knowledge to help patients who require postural stability exercises and rehabilitation.
Dr. Mankey also has a keen interest in pre and post-pregnancy care. Dr. Mankey believes undertaking Pilates while you are pregnant helps the body adapt and recover from the natural strains placed on the body during pregnancy.
