    Ferility and Chinese Medicine

    Acupuncture for Infertility: Part of a Long Tradition

    Acupuncture and chinese herbal medicine are an effective and natural treatment for infertility. In fact, acupuncture and herbal medicine for infertility have been very important aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years. Fertility was one of the main concerns of the royal families of China, since an heir was needed to maintain their dynasties.

  • Natural Conception
  • Female Subfertilty and Infertility
  • Chinese Medicine and IVF

    Natural Conception
    In order for a woman to conceive, her body should be in optimal health with appropriate hormone levels, good quality eggs and regular periods. Our treatments aim to promote fertility and regulate menstruation through acupuncture, herbal medicine, diet and lifestyle practices (e.g. stress management). The duration of treatment varies. Usually, we recommend that a patient go through three full menstrual cycles with acupuncture treatments (combined with herbs if appropriate) to enable the body to make changes that increase fertility.

    Acupuncture can be effective in:

    * improving ovarian function
    * enhance follicle/egg quality
    * regulate reproductive hormones
    * increase blood flow to nourish the womb
    * increase the thickness of the uterine lining to support implantation

    Once pregnancy occurs, ongoing support is provided throughout the pregnancy and post-natal period.

    Female Subfertilty and Infertility
    There are many reasons or causes that may explain why a woman is having difficulty in conceiving – hormonal imbalances, endometriosis, polycyctic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), disorders of ovulation, tubul blockage, inflammation of pelvic organs, etc. Age is also an important factor in infertility - one in three women over 35 years will face fertility problems. In about 10% of cases, the exact reason is unknown.

    For the Chinese practitioner, all the above “labels” will provide some useful details about the disorder. However, the treatment offered by the practitioner will rest on completely different diagnostic tools based on Chinese medicine principles.

    At Acu Healthworks, we treat a range of women’s health disorders that cause infertility such as:

    * Hormonal imbalances
    * Anovulation (no ovulation)
    * Endometriosis
    * Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
    * Amenorrhoea (no periods)
    * Fibroids
    * Luteal phase insufficiency
    * Menstrual irregularities
    * Tubul blockage
    * Inflammation of pelvic organs
    * Early menopause

    Chinese Medicine and IVF
    Women undergoing IVF were 65 percent more likely to become pregnant when they combined the procedure with acupuncture, a recent study has shown (please see “Acupuncture and Fertility Research” below).

    At Acu Healthworks, our treatment program for IVF support is designed to:

    * Optimize your chances of getting pregnant
    * Reduce stress and enhance your health and well-being
    * Relieve symptoms and side effects associated with the IVF treatment

    We recommend that you commence acupuncture treatments 3 months prior to the IVF cycle. Treatments will be once every 2 weeks.

    Once the IVF cycle begins, weekly treatments focus on supporting ovarian function, regulating fertility hormones, thickening the uterine lining and minimising the side effects of IVF drugs.

    Acupuncture just before the transfer will further thicken the uterine lining while relaxing the uterus to minimise contractions.

    Acupuncture immediately after the transfer will promote blood flow to the uterus to nourish the embryo and further reduce uterine contractions to prevent miscarriage or bleeding.

    If you have already started the IVF cycle, acupuncture can still benefit if given directly before and after the embryo transfer. Studies have shown that such treatments can increase success rates by up to 43% compared to a success rate of 26% without acupuncture treatments (Fertility and Sterility, Vol.77, No.4, April 2002).

    Practitioner Profile: Dr. Mun-Yee Chik

    Prior to immersing herself in the study and philosophy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Dr. Chik had worked for a number of years in the pharmaceutical and clinical research industry. As such, she recognises both the benefits and the limitations of modern medicine. She also understands that while it is important to adhere to the essence and principles of TCM, the practice of healing cannot operate in isolation without considering the complex western environment in which we live.

    Therefore Dr. Chik believes in an integrative approach to healthcare and wellbeing, combining classical Chinese Medicine with an evidence-based Western orientation to her treatment. She is also a passionate advocate of the TCM tenets of preventative health - diet & nutrition, lifestyle, exercise, emotional and mental wellbeing.

    Dr. Chik has special interests in stress management, musculoskeletal disorders, IVF & fertility support, women's health as well as aging-related conditions.
