About Tran

Education

Tran has gained a degree of Bachelor Science in Chinese medicine (UTS), Masters in Herbal Medicine (UTS), and a certificate of acupuncture (China). She has travelled abroad to practice her internship at The Redcross Hospital in Hangzhou & Guanzhou Hospital in China; and gained further experience in Denmark and Germany. Tran continues to expand her knowledge on health, wellbeing and science through regular education in Australia and abroad.

Philosophy

Chinese medicine and healing is so much more than just the use of acupuncture and herbal medicine to relieve symptoms. Healing and wellbeing is about taking ownership of your body and embracing the journey of one-self. It involves understanding your daily habits of thinking, eating and exercising and making the connection to how these habits, over time, play a key role in influencing the physical signs and symptoms you present with today.

Wellbeing becomes a way of life. One worth maintaining. Join me and open yourself up to vitality and pure contentment.

Interests

Tran loves to travel the world to experience and explore various cultures, their history and lifestyles. The past and present foundations of various cultures offers an insight into the wellbeing of human nature. She’s fascinated by the human psyche and spirit and is constantly gaining further understanding into these areas through literature and clinical experience. Her interests extend to the appreciation of various forms of art including photography, fine art, sculptures, theatre and dance.

Tran actively participates in sporting activities. She has competed in state athletics throughout her teenage years and has participated in dragonboat rowing for 6 years in which she has represented Australia at the World Championships in 2007. Currently, Tran maintains wellbeing through yoga, walking, daily meditation and utilizing natures’ gifts (herbs, plants, water etc).

Values

“If I diminish you, I diminish myself.”
(The Most Reverend Desmond M. Tutu)

Some values must be kept and passed on to future generations if we are to create a better future on earth.

I respect the African philosophy that praises another being with the wonderful quality, Ubuntu. The concept describes a person to be hospitable, friendly, generous, gentle, caring, open and compassionate. People with ubuntu have high self-esteem and self-worth as these are generated by knowing they belong to a greater whole.

Our health needs to be valued and cherished. To compromise one's health is to compromise one's life. Undoubtedly, no pills can ever replace eating well, living in a clean environment and regular exercise.

This is natural medicine. It is better for you.

Why use Chinese medicine?

It is comforting to know that Chinese medicine has a vast history that extends over 2,000 years ago and remains to be used world-wide. Countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Switzerland, Holland, Germany, France, Denmark, and all over Asia have been reaping the benefits of Chinese medicine since the early 70s. Australians are rapidly gaining a greater understanding and awareness of these benefits and are quickly utilising Chinese medicine to its full potential in treating certain health conditions in addition to maintaining optimum health and well-being.

Chinese medicine is also popular because it is natural and effective. The different therapies including acupuncture, herbal medicine, exercise, and nutrition focuses on restoring the individual's body back to its healing state.

What does treatment involve?

When you visit Tran for an acupuncture or herbal consultation, you will be asked a series of questions about your medical background and about your current health status. This is then used to form a diagnosis followed by selecting the appropriate treatment approach for your situation. Acupuncture, and /or herbal medicine may be used. Lifestyle suggestions as to dietary changes, exercising, relaxation techniques may also be offered where appropriate or necessary.

When should you see a practitioner?

Currently, people are habitually seeing the doctors or health practitioners when they are sick or feel the pain. Treatment is then focused on getting the person back on track.

Chinese medicine discerns illness as a pattern of disharmony or imbalance of qi (life force) in the body. Treatment focuses on correcting this balance before it manifests itself physically in the long-term. In this way, Chinese medicine is often used as a method of prevention of illness by helping the body maintain optimal health.

Does acupuncture hurt?

The various factors that make acupuncture NOT painful include:

  • Very fine and sharp needles

  • No injection of any substances into the body

  • Needle goes past your pain receptors (in second layer of skin)

  • The body has various pain threshold

The patient may feel a slight sensation as the needle contacts the Qi. This feeling is known as 'deqi' or getting qi. Deqi is not unpleasant and the sensation can either be a dull ache, a numbness, a tingling or a sensation of heat. The sensation can be localised around the needled acupuncture point, or can travel along the line of the 'meridian' and can affect whole areas of the body or the limbs.

What are the needles like?

Acupuncture needles are pre-sterilised and disposable - used only once. The needles have a coiled handle and an extremely fine shaft with a sharp point. The needles are solid and no substances are injected into the body. Needles come in various lengths and thickness and are used according to the area of the body to be needled.

What happens during a treatment and how many treatments do I need?

Treatment protocols, frequency and duration will vary depending on factors including individual's condition, age, constitution, individual's body response to treatment etc. All these will be discussed in consultation with the practitioner, Tran. During treatment, Tran selects appropriate points for each individual case according to the diagnosed "disharmony". The needles are usually retained 15-30 minutes. This time allows for the patient to physically and mentally rest while the body responds to the stimulation of the needles. A course of treatment will vary in both number of sessions and frequency of visits depending on individual's condition, and response factor. Each individual's response rate depends on the individual's level of sensitivity and healing rate. Some individual respond immediately, while others may take a couple of days, weeks or months. The result is however always gradual and positive.

The more chronic or long-term the problem is, the longer it will take for the already weakened body to recover and heal itself through repair and balance. The practitioner will also explain the body's stages of healing in relationship to each individual's health condition.

What is the difference between prescribed herbs and patent pills?

Chinese herbs can be prescribed by the practitioner for each individual. These can be in the form of raw herbs, granules, powder, capsule, or pills. Raw herbs are used in the form of a herbal decoction boiled up whereas granulated/powdered herbs can be easily and quickly dissolved in hot water. The advantage here is that the herbs can be suitably prescribed for each individual.

What Can I Expect to Feel?

Your hormones, immune and nervous systems are being stimulated during an acupuncture treatment. Depending on your sensitivity, you'll be aware of this activity. You'll feel more relaxed, calmer, and will experience a good night's sleep, and sometime increased appetite.

Patent pills come ready-made, easy to use and is usually sold over-the counter. The disadvantage is that pills do not accommodate for every possible condition a patient may have and so are not suitable in all cases.

Can I combine Chinese medical treatment with western medicine?

Many individuals undergo Chinese medical treatments complementary to conventional medication. Always check first with both your medical doctor and your Chinese medical practitioner before making an informed decision.

How do I choose a good Chinese medical practitioner?

Factors to consider include: Length of training and education, length of practice, areas of specialization, language ability, word of mouth, member of a recognised health association.

Is it covered by private health insurance?

Currently, acupuncture is covered by the majority leading private health insurance. The amount of rebate depends on the health insurer and the health fund cover one is in. You will need to check with your health fund.

How can acupuncture help with so many different types of health problems?

Acupuncture restores the body's balance or homeostasis to specific body systems which as a result, allows for the body to naturally heal itself. The body maintains homeostasis on a daily basis through various body systems including the cardiovascular system (heart, blood, blood vessels etc), lymphatic system and immunity, respiratory system, digestive system, metabolism and the urinary system.

Can acupuncture help with weight loss?

Specific stimulation of acupuncture points on the ear and on the body can suppress appetite to establish a different eating pattern within the first 4 weeks to help lose weight. Therapies
Chinese Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine have been used for centuries by many cultures world-wide. Asians incorporate herbs as part of their diet, cooked with foods or drunk as a tea decoction to strengthen or balance the body’s main internal systems. Herbal medicine can be used to either treat specific health conditions or to maintain optimal wellbeing.

Chinese herbal medicine involves the use of plants and its parts to restore balance to the body to promote an efficient functioning body. The herbs vary in flavours ranging from sweet, astringent, sour, salty and bitter. This difference is due to the type of plant and its part being used. The medicinal properties of the plants is derived from 'active' natural chemicals, perfectly balanced by essential vitamins and minerals to minimise side-effects. In effect, the herb has the ability to support the body's main functions while simultaneously treating the disease.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture works by stimulating specific points in the body to help regulate major internal systems including the immune, digestive, nervous, cardiovascular and endocrine. It achieves this by restoring your body to it's original state of balance when you fall ill, thereby regulating hormones, stimulating free flow of blood and oxygen to nourish and relax muscles, nerves, tendons and organs.

There are over 300 acupuncture points on the body. Specific points are selected based on the assessment of your health conditions. Points when stimulated, affect associated organs including the liver, gallbladder, stomach, spleen, heart, small intestine, large intestines, bladder, kidneys and the reproductive organs.

Acupuncture effectively treats many health concerns including:

  • Fertility & women’s issues (PMS, painful & irregular/no menstruation, infertility, PCOS)

  • Stress relief (sleep difficulty, digestive complaints, heart & blood pressure issues, anxiety, depression, skin issues)

  • Immune function (cold & flu, infections, sinusitis, inflammation)Pain relief (headache, arthritis, PMS, muscular, injuries)

  • Sports injuries – reco

Nutrition

Adequate nutrition is essential for an efficient functioning body. Foods contain nutrients including vitamins, protein, carbohydrates, minerals and essential fatty acids needed to nourish and strengthen your physical body and brain.

In addition, various flavours including sweet, sour, salty, pungent and bitter also have therapeutic effects in the body. In brief, the pungent flavour stimulates digestion, disperses mucous congestion in the lung and improves a sluggish liver; while bitter cools the body and can be used to reduce inflammation and lower fever. The sweet flavour (from complex carbohydrates) is used to strengthen weaknesses, energize and relax body, nerves and brain.

Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic massage involves techniques such as acupressure, sports, and remedial to move, stimulate and release muscles from tension. As a result, helping to relax the body and mind.

What's unique about Ross's yoga class?

Ross incorporates yoga and shiatsu massage to help you move, stretch, strengthen, align and restore muscle and mental balance to where you need it the most.

Classes are individually tailored to give you maximum benefit.

General Info
Health Conditions

Optimum Fertility

It is important to prepare your body now to help create the best environment to nurture and develop a baby in the future. This include understanding how your current lifestyle, stress, eating and exercise habits affects your reproductive functions. A consultation with Tran will clarify your current health status addressing any underlying issues affecting your reproductive function.

Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs can help Reproduction by:

  • Treating underlying health issues affecting fertillity.

  • Reducing stress hormones that interferes with ovulation.

  • Normalize hormones that regulate ovulation so an egg is released.

  • Increase blood flow to the uterus, improving the chances of a fertilized egg implanting.

  • Improve ovulation cycle in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (pcos) which makes getting pregnant difficult.

  • Improving pregnancy rates in women undergoing in vitro fertilisation (IVF).

Stress and unexplained Infertility

Chinese medicine recognises stress and emotional imbalances as one of the major reasons for being unable to conceive, which typically coincides with a western diagnosis of unexplained infertility.

Common effects of stress on fertility:

  • Stress can affect the hypothalamus which can affect a woman's ability to ovulate.

  • Stress leads to the adrenal borrowing more progesterone to make more adrenal hormones, therefore chronic stress can lead to lower progesterone levels.

  • Stress can increase cortisol levels, which can block progesterone receptors and interfere with the embryo implanting into the uterine lining.

  • Stress can increase prolactin levels and interfere with ovulation.

While infertility may appear to be the problem, it is actually the manifestation of a deeper underlying imbalance. Chinese medicine focuses on creating a healthy and fertile body by correcting the body's imbalance. Once balanced, the body will function as it naturally will.

Immune System

Your immune system is your body's ultimate line of defense against disease. As such, it is crucial to regularly support your immune system to help prevent ill-health in the short and long term, speed up recovery and healing of wounds, infections etc. You can help support your immune function with acupuncture, chinese herbs, massage, nutrition and a balanced lifestyle.

Your immune system includes your lymphatic system, white blood cells, digestive bacteria, skin and mucous membranes, antimicrobial substances, and natural killer cells. These serve to protect you from injuries to your body particularly by poisons, foreign bodies and invading pathogens.

Boosting and regulating your immune system over time will make you feel fabulous, strong and attain mental clarity. In addition, a strong immune system will help you combat infections and symptoms from diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, multiple scelrosis, the common cold and flu are just to name a few.

It is important to recognise when your immune system is run down. Signs to note include poor digestive function, changes in bowel movement (diarrhoea/constipation), constant lethargy, body temperature changes, constant infections, slow healing of wounds or recovery from illness, skin problems, sinus problems, allergies etc. Seek treatment immediately to prevent further damage to your body.

Stress Management

Stress affects all individuals in various ways. The triggers of stress differs from person to person. People quite often are not attuned to recognising the effects of stress on their body until the accumulation leads to physical signs. It is often due to emotional, physical or mental strain. Stress forces a person to react to situations in a rigid and predictable manner. The stress response triggers off high levels of the hormones adrenaline and cortisol causing negative effects on the body and mind, producing headaches/pain, elevated blood pressure, gastric upset, heart problems, emotional instability (anxiety, depression, lowered immune function and ultimately slows down recovery and healing of illnesses.

Your body uses significant amount of nutrients during times of stress. It’s important to replace nutrients such as zinc, magnesium and vitamin B & C. In addition, acupuncture, herbs, massage and meditation helps balance the effects of stress by calming your body and mind.

Pain Management

Acupuncture manages chronic pain by activating the release of natural pain chemicals including enkephaline, endorphines and opiods. Natural mood regulators namely serotonin and dopamine are neurotransmitters that relaxes the body and helps you sleep better to repair cellular damage and relieve pain.

Digestive System

Your digestive system plays an important role in maintaining immunity and assimilation of nutrients. Your digestive system involves organs including the stomach, spleen, gallbladder, liver, small & large intestine, kidneys & bowel.
Poor and weak digestion changes the balance of good bacteria, digestive enzymes, stomach acid and lining, leading to symptoms including bloating, reflux, pain, indigestion, diarrhoea, constipation, irritable bowel and heat sensations. Chronic digestive dysfunctions results in immune-related illnesses, anxiety and depression.

It is essential to regulate and strengthen your digestive function to obtain strong immunity and proper assimilation of nutrients for the body's use. You can achieve this with acupuncture, herbs and nutrition.

The Right Time For Treatment

In times of stress

In today's hectic society, we often place our personal health below other aspects such as work. Ask yourself, "are you compromising your health by delaying treatment?". It is vital to care, nurture and strengthen your body both inside and out to prevent the accumulation of stress damaging your body. Treatment will help promote peace and calm to your body and mind. This will give you sufficient strength to embrace a personal or busy work period.

Do you know the TRUE state of your health?

Find out what your symptoms are really saying about your health and learn to make the connection. Call or email Tran to arrange a thorough consultation.

Do you know the real COST of your ill-health?

Is your ill-health placing stress on your relationship, family, work production, decision-making ability, immune function, physical function etc..
Why are you putting up with the pain and suffering?

When To See a Practitioner?

1. Intensive Care - When you don't feel 100%

Currently, people are habitually seeing the doctors or health practitioners when they feel sick, in pain or injured. In these situations, treatment is short-term based, focused on relieving symptoms to help you get back on track.

2. Rehabilitative Care

This period of care focuses on strengthening the body and specific injury to ensure full recovery and repair of muscles, tissues, bones etc. And the continued strengthening of the entire body to achieve optimal health for full and efficient functioning of the body.

3. Maintenance Care

When you are experiencing a lot of stress (work, personal, family etc) in your life; or feeling a change of weather - it is during these times that your body finds it difficult to adjust and adapt to the changes at hand. As a result, your body will be experiencing an imbalance of qi. Maintenance involves a focus on balancing the imbalance (of qi or life force) before it manifests itself physically in the long-term.
Get a thorough Chinese medical consultation or seek care when your body presents you with subtle signs signifying changes in your body. For example, when you constantly feel tired, emotional stress resulting from relationship problems, death of a loved one, work-related issues, financial problems etc, difficulty sleeping, experiencing muscle aches, pain and weakness, digestive complaints, and difficulty with bowel movement are just to name a few.

Research

Scientific research into the therapeutic effects of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine has been well documented since the early seventies. Both acupuncture and herbal medicine have been used world wide and is recognised by The World Health Organisation as successful treatments for numerous health conditions. These include pain, sinusitis, digestive & bowel conditions (IBS), PMS, dysmenorrhoea, ammenorrhoea, psoarisis, skin problems, cold & flu, insomnia & sleep difficulties, stress-related problems etc..

Some of the regulatory responses perceived by the body with acupuncture include:

  • Increased blood flow and oxygen to relax muscles and nerves.

  • Stimulates the release of endorphins and enkephalin, and relaxes nerve endings to relieve pain.

  • Regulates blood pressure

  • Stimulates release of serotonin to promote good sleep

  • Regulates hormones to treat headaches, fertility problems, menopausal complaints, menstrual pain etc.

  • Strengthens the immune system

When you visit Tran for an acupuncture or herbal consultation, you will be asked a series of questions about your medical background and about your current health status. This is then used to form a Chinese medical diagnosis followed by selection of an appropriate treatment approach, and selection of appropriate points (to be needled) according to their specific action in relationship to the identified disharmony. The needles are usually retained 15-30 minutes. The individual may feel a slight sensation as the needle contacts the 'Qi'. This feeling is known as 'deqi' or getting qi. Deqi is not unpleasant and the sensation can be a dull ache, a numbness, a tingling or a sensation of heat. The sensation can be localised around the needled acupuncture point, or can travel along the line of the 'meridian' and can affect whole areas of the body, or parts of the body such as the limbs.

A course of treatment will vary in both number of sessions and frequency of visits depending on an individual's condition and response factor. Some individual respond immediately, while others may take a couple of days, weeks or months. The result is however always gradual and positive.

Treatment protocols, frequency and duration of treatment vary depending on factors affecting an individual's condition. These factors include one's age, constitution, body's response to treatment etc. All these will be discussed in consultation.

The more chronic or long-term the problem is, the longer it will take for the already weakened body to recover and heal itself through repair and balance. For a better understanding of an individual's healing progress, the stages of healing in relationship to each individual's health condition will also be discussed during each treatment session. Acupuncture, and /or herbal medicine may be used. Lifestyle suggestions as to dietary changes, exercise, relaxation techniques may also be offered where appropriate or necessary.
