About Dr Patrick
Dr Patrick Kuhn brings a broad life experience to the practice of osteopathy and has over fifteen years clinical experience treating musculoskeletal conditions.
Patrick started his working life in Far North Queensland as a jackaroo on cattle stations. He then made a quantum leap and moved to Melbourne to study dance at the Victorian College of the arts. Patrick then moved on to health care, he started out by completing a diploma in Shiatsu and Chinese medicine which then led to his interest in hands on health. After experiencing the benefits of osteopathy and wanting to further his knowledge he enrolled in the five year Osteopathic course at RMIT University Melbourne.
In 2002 Patrick established his own practice in Hampton. In conjunction with the Osteopathy Patrick also ran a Pilates studio. The clinic focused on spinal injury rehabilitation, pre and post natal care and the treatment of infants and children. After selling that practice in 2008, Patrick has been focusing on further studies in cranial osteopathy and Anthroposophical medicine (Rudolf Steiner).
Patrick has a special interest in treating infants and children with cranial osteopathy and assisting women through pregnancy, preparation for labour, and post natal recovery. Patrick has extensive experience in treating chronic headache’s and neck pain along with spinal and sports injuries.
By combining cranial and structural osteopathy Patrick looks to restore mechanical alignment and balance physiological activity to return the body back to a harmonious state of health. He also has ten years experience teaching Pilates and combines it with his osteopathic treatment to provide a comprehensive whole body approach to his patients care.
What is the history of Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a "whole body" system of manual therapy, based on unique biomechanical principles, which uses a wide range of techniques to treat musculo-skeletal problems and other functional disorders of the body. It was developed in America in the 1870’s by a Missouri Doctor, Andrew Taylor Still, and has developed to the point where it is now widely recognized throughout the world as one of the most scientifically validated and effective "complementary" therapies.
What training does an Osteopath have?
Osteopaths undergo 5 years full time university training. The training consists of either a 3 year degree in Clinical Science followed by a 2 year Masters in Health Science, or a double degree in Applied Science and Osteopathic Science. All Osteopaths are registered with the State Registration Board and are members of the Australian Osteopathic Association..
Do I need a referral from a GP?
No, simply make an appointment with your osteopath directly. Like going to the dentist, you do not need a referral from your GP, however increasingly GP's are referring patients to osteopaths. Osteopathy is a complementary form of treatment and works well when used in conjunction with medical treatment.
Is osteopathic treatment covered by my private health fund?
Like dental work, osteopathic treatment is covered under the ancillary or extras cover of major health insurers. We offer instant rebates via HICAPS. The rebate varies depending on your health insurer, so check the details of your policy.
Is osteopathic treatment covered by Medicare?
Yes, Medicare now covers osteopathic treatment in certain conditions. In the instance that you suffer from chronic pain, your GP can refer you to an osteopath for up to five free treatments each year. You must have a referral from your GP, so talk to them about an Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) plan.
Is osteopathic treatment covered by Work Cover
Yes, the cost of osteopathic treatment is covered. If you already have a claim number, please bring it with you. Otherwise, let your GP know that you want to consult one of our osteopaths. We can also help you arrange the necessary approval.
How many treatments will I need?
Your osteopath will expect to see positive results within 2-4 treatments for common symptoms. However, it must be emphasised that each individual is unique therefore some people will require more or less treatment before their symptoms improve.
How effective is osteopathic treatment?
Government and medical studies over recent years have consistently shown osteopathy to be less expensive, use fewer drugs and have higher patient satisfaction than conventional medical care for back, neck and other musculo-skeletal pain.
