Alignment Therapies

How Can I Help You? About Me

I enjoy a challenge and look below the surface to identify and treat postural and biomechanical patterns which may link seemingly unrelated issues and symptoms. I think that it is essential for people to know more about their bodies so that they feel more in control when it comes to looking out for their health. I take great pleasure in working with people to help them better understand and utilise bodies so that they are able to care for themselves and manage issue should they arise. I find great fulfilment in helping people lead a healthier, happier and more mobile life.

My treatments are based on an appreciation of the interrelated nature of the body and include a variety of remedial techniques such as myofascial release, myofascial cupping, trigger point therapy, positional release, hot stone massage and the application of essential oils. I love learning and am currently undertaking further studies in craniosacral therapy and myofascial release - a range of techniques designed to free up muscles and fascia so that they can work efficiently and without restriction to move and support your body.

Fascia is a connective tissue which is continuous throughout your whole body with no beginning or end point. It is simply arranged differently and has slightly different ingredients in its makeup depending on what its function is at that point in the body. Because it weaves throughout your whole body, it can have far reaching effects when it is damaged or injured, so we may need to work in a different area to where you are feeling painful symptoms to help recover and reduce the likelihood that you injure yourself in a similar way in the future.

How can I help you?

The best part of my job is watching clients take control of their health as they learn how to care for their body. They may walk into the clinic in pain, not sure how they ended up in the state they’re in, or what they can do about it. Often, they feel that their pain or discomfort is stopping them from doing things that they love, things that they used to do with ease, things that they need to do to continue to earn a living!

Massage is based on the premise that the body has the ability to heal itself…… My job is to facilitate this healing process – to help you heal yourself, and then to teach you more about your body so that you can begin to work in partnership with it…. hopefully you’re going to be together a very long time!!

Do you work at a desk all day?
Many of the people I see come to me experiencing pain resulting from the fact that they live behind their desks for eight (or more!) hours a day staring at a computer screen and fielding telephone calls. Your neck hurts, your lower back aches, you have a killer headache and you are just so stressed you’re ready to snap! Sound familiar?

I can help you improve your body mechanics so that your shoulders move freely, rather than just providing a platform for your head to sit on! I can help relieve your headache and identify where it’s coming from and what to do when you feel it start to creep up.

Together, we can re-educate your hips and lower back so they remember that in your spare time, you like to walk on two legs, rather than scoot along in a chair, thus relieving the pressure on you lower spine! And guess what else? Massage has been shown to help manage stress and improve overall feelings of wellbeing and sleep quality… at the very least you get to lie down for an hour with no computer and turn off your phone!

Does your job involve heavy lifting or other physically demanding tasks?
I have treated people who build houses, cut concrete, climb up trees, cut down trees, pick up rubbish, stack shelves, crawl around in roofs, and even some who haul other people around all day. If I’m not familiar with what you do, you get to teach me about it!

Over time, you might have noticed that the things you used to do easily have become a little more challenging. Maybe your legs and hips hurt? Your joints have started to ache a bit. Your lower back doesn’t have the strength it used to and now it hurts when you lie down at night or sit down to watch TV.
Let me help you lengthen out the tight muscles and ease the tension around your joints so they can move more freely. Let’s have a look and see which muscles aren’t doing the job they should be and help them get working again so your strength starts to return.

Are you an expectant mum?
So….. you’ve probably noticed some changes lately huh? Lower back a little achy? Hips tight? Ankles a bit swollen? Getting beaten internally in the wee (pun intended) hours of the night as you toss and turn?
Or maybe you’re new to this whole thing and feeling great… in which case disregard the first paragraph…maybe those things won’t happen to you.

But if they are, it may interest you to know that regular massage throughout your pregnancy can help to reduce swelling, ease tight muscles, improve function of and nourish joints, as well as improve circulation. It can also help increase body confidence as you start to understand why things are happening as they are, which bits really are normal and how darned amazing your body is to manage the changes to accommodate and nourish the little critter growing inside you!

And best of all….. you get to lie down! Even face down on your belly if you want. That’s right, I said face down. I have a specially designed pillow that supports your growing belly through all the different stages of your pregnancy, moulding to your body. If you prefer of course, you can lie on your side or even remain seated. Either way you can be guaranteed that however you are comfortable, I’m comfortable treating you.

Are you the parent of a young child?
Well I really don’t need to tell you about multi tasking, do I? I’m so glad you’ve salvaged a minute for yourself to do some research on massage. Looking after wriggling bundles of arms and legs capable of a .5 second mood swing takes its toll. In and out of car seats and baby capsules, bending over change tables, falling asleep on a bed made for someone a quarter your size. I’ll bet you’re amazed at all the contortion acts you didn’t know you could do.

But you may have noticed that lately you wish someone would just help you ease the tension in your shoulders... and your lower back…. maybe a little relief from this dull headache….Just give you a foot rub for goodness sakes, you work hard enough!

Well, I’m volunteering. You might be a stay at home mum or dad, maybe you’re working as well, whatever the situation I think I can help you manage a little better. Massage can help to reduce tissue tension, identify and treat trigger points, retrain tissue locked into poor postural positions and reduce stress. Sound good? Give me a ring before you get sidetracked!!

Do you enjoy sports?
Whether you’re a weekend warrior, or an Iron Man or Woman, I don’t need to tell you how great it feels to have those tight knots worked out after a big event!
After a workout I can help with specific massage techniques to help your body remove waste products from muscle tissue, reducing the effects of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) and speeding recovery.

In between events, we can target sports specific areas to increase range of motion, improve joint function and flexibility and really give you the edge. Massage should form part of any comprehensive training routine to prevent or treat injury and enhance performance.

About Me.

I have been a massage therapist for over nine years now and I love what I do!
My ongoing fascination with the body is centred on its interconnectedness – there is not one part of your body that works in isolation from the rest of it! As such we need to look at you as a whole person, not just your back pain, or your headaches or your sore knee.

Over the years, I have learned that different people and different situations require different approaches to achieve a successful outcome. When you come to see me, you can rest assured that I will treat you to the very best of my ability, according to your circumstances on the day. Your treatment will need to be different from visit to visit as you change and recover. Sometimes you may need to be treated gently, sometimes you may require a bit more pressure, but I will never put you in a position that causes you more discomfort than you are happy to manage and I will always give you as much information as you want on what we are doing and why. You have the last say on how we work together.

My business is called Alignment Therapies, because that is what I am all about – helping you to bring yourself back into alignment. Having worked extensively with other practitioners, I am often able to identify where a combined approach may be appropriate in order to optimise health outcomes. Many problems which present physically may have emotional or even nutritional counterparts, just as any nutritional or emotional issue may affect your physical wellbeing. We are multidimensional and each part affects the whole. I am committed to helping you achieve and maintain wellness on all levels, so if I don’t know how to help you fix it, I can point you in the direction of someone who does!

So why don’t you give me a call? Let’s find out what we can do to help you be the happiest healthiest version of you! I look forward to meeting you.
