What is an Osteopath?

Osteopathy is a form of manual medicine which focuses on “whole-body” treatment of the musculo-skeletal system and other functional disorders. It is guided by unique principles which:

Focus on the body as a unit – and as such look for the cause of a problem and not just the symptoms

Recognise the importance of correct biomechanics – and its influence on the body’s functional ability

Understand the body’s inherent ability to heal itself.

What training do Osteopaths have?

In Australia, Osteopaths are statutorily registered practitioners and five year, full-time university training is available, which covers anatomy, physiology, pathology and general medical diagnosis in addition to Osteopathic technique. Osteopaths are primary care practitioners, and are trained to be able to recognise conditions which require medical referral. They are also trained to carry out standard medical examinations of the cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous system.

Osteopathy can provide treatment for:
  • Postural and mobility problems
  • Back and Neck Pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Pregnancy
  • Asthma
  • Sciatica
