What is EMDR?

EMDR or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a psychotherapy treatment that was originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories (Shapiro, 1989a, 1989b). Shapiro’s (2001). In Australia courts have categorised EMDR as a similar process as Hypnosis. EMDR is used generally to relieve the symptoms of Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health problems. EMDR utilises a an approach of three protocols: (1) the actual event or events form the past which have created the present situation.; (2) those issues that are happening right now and that are creating a distressing situation, (3) the client develops skills, and mechanisms to overcome or cope with the past limiting situation to a degree that those past limiting issues are reduced to a negligible manageable state.

What is Past Life Regression Therapy?

For some people it past life regression is about espousing a belief in reincarnation, but for many of my clients hypnosis is the vehicle whereby they can plug into experiences associated with their past life. Regression therapy should not be confused with the highly questionable process commonly known as “Repressed Memory Therapy” or “Recovered Memory Therapy”.

“Recovered Memory Therapy (RMT) is acknowledged as being of dubious value or dodgy at the least, and now largely an abandoned method; it is not sanctioned to be used by registered Hypnotherapist in Australia.

I totally reject and oppose “Repressed Memory Therapy” or any of the practices associated with this therapy. The practice gained a degree of notoriety a number of years ago particularly in the USA the resultant practice has many negative side effects. A client’s memory which is recovered during therapy must be viewed critically and although therapeutic analysis is appropriate and desirable corroboration of the highest standard must always be sought if the memory needs to be tested or examined within a present day or real life situation.
