About Ayurveda
Most of us are familiar with yoga but how many people are aware of Ayurveda? Ayurveda is India’s traditional form of health and healing that developed alongside yoga some 5000 ago. Ayur means ‘life‘ and veda means “’knowledge or science’ so it is often referred to as ‘The Science of Life’.

Ayurveda is the ancient art of healing and wellbeing that focuses on living naturally. Todays western approach to medicine and healing is to treat the disease but Ayurveda takes a different approach. Ayurveda does not wait for a disease to appear, it maintains the body on a day to day basis believing that "prevention is better than cure".

It is a traditional approach to life that focus on the whole person, not just the anatomy. Ayurveda believes that we are the by products of how we live and the body type that we were born with. These individual body types have to be kept in balance in order to remain healthy and harmonious. Learning what is right and wrong for your individual body type is the key to the principles and practices of Ayurveda. So, what is good for one may not be good for another.

Ayurveda uses many approaches to healing and balancing the body and a lot of them we already know and practice. A lot of them our parents or grandparents knew about but unfortunately have been lost as we have been trained to take the fast and pharmaceutical approach to wellbeing. This is an approach that we are now realsing comes at a cost. Ayurveda gives us natural alternatives, things like herbal remedies, healthy thoughtful home cooking, connecting with nature, eating with the seasons, connecting with yourself, your family and a community. This is what Ayurveda is all about. And we are starting to go back to these time honoured traditions by taking a more natural approach to life. Just look at the growing organics industry and environmental awareness.

Ayurvedic practices that you may be familiar with are yoga and meditation. Yoga is a beautiful practice that is becoming more and more popular around the world. It is a great way to connect with the mind and body and relieve stress and body aches. Just a few simple stretches to wake up and connect with your body and mind every morning can have a profound effect on the rest of the day. Meditation is another practice that Ayurveda says we should include in our daily life. Meditation is a way of listening to your endless mind chatter in the hope of quitening it down. It's not about not thinking, it's about trying to give your tired, over worked mind a chance to relax. It is not easy at first and it requires some dedication and lots of practice but over time you will come to look forward to the peace and stillness that it brings to your days.

Another Ayurvedic practice is self massage. Warm oil to gently massaged over the entire body before bathing, it is a truly nourishing and grounding experience! Done daily or weekly, morning or evening it is a practice that will bring you may rewards including stress reduction, improved circulation and the elimination of toxins.

The Doshas

Ayurveda believes that all things in nature, including people, are made up of varying degrees of the elements; ether, air, fire, water and earth. From these five elements there are three doshas; vata (ether & air), pitta (fire) and kapha (water & earth), and all people have one, two or even all three of these doshas dominant as their basic constitution. A persons dosha will then be effected by various foods, thoughts, relationships, jobs, seasons and everyday activities. This means that everything that enters our system though any of our senses will effect the balance of the elements in our bodies and minds. It works on the principle that like increases like and opposing elements bring harmony. For example, if you are suffering from dry skin due to excess vata (air is drying) then you can increase the water element by eating foods that are moist and nourishing such as dates or by having an oil massage. Or you could decrease the air element by reducing the amount of salt or crackers in your diet. It doesn’t really matter how you do it just as long as the balance is restored and the health issue alleviated. So as you can see understanding your dosha and the elements and how they relate to each other is the key to creating balance in your life.

Diet

Diet and nutrition are the corner stone of Ayurveda. As stated above each person is made up of a combination of the five elements. When a persons dosha is determined that are then given a list of foods and tastes that will either increase or decrease a particular element in their body or mind. You can therefore control your health and balance your system by including or excluding certain foods.

A lot of people think that because Ayurveda is from India that they will have to eat Indian food, lentils and become a vegetarian to follow an Ayurvedic diet. This is not the case. The principles of Ayurvedic nutrition can be used with all food. An Ayurvedic consultant will design a diet around what you like and already eat so that the new diet is something you will actually find easy to impliment. Making drastic changes to a persons diet is not sustainable over the long run so it is better to make small changes and build on them over time.

Ayurvedic Massage

An Ayurvedic massage is quite different to most other massages. It works with the energy centers of the body known as marmas. Marmas are similar to acupressure points and are located all over the body. During an Ayurvedic massage these points are stimulated to increase prana (energy) in the body. Once the prana is increased it will flow throughout the body and release blockages both mentally and physically.
