About Tony

Qualifications

  • Registered Health Provider for Acupuncture

Hi, my name is Tony Thomson, a fully qualified Acupuncturist and I have been helping people ease their pain for over 25 years. Ive worked in Ashgrove and West Ashgrove continuously since starting my practice and have clients from all over Brisbane and Australia coming to see me to benefit from my special blend of acupuncture, massage and structural balancing.

Ive been working in the health industry since 1987. Wow thats over 27 years, time flies when youre having fun! During those years I have probably done over 45,000 treatments.

At school I loved Anatomy and learning how the muscles worked in the body. When I won a Baseball Scholarship to attend college in the USA I decided to study Physiotherapy, I thought if I couldnt make it, then maybe I could help someone else stay fit enough and injury free to make it as a pro player.
After two years, and making the Deans List, I returned home and changed my course to the study of Acupuncture. A year later I decided to give my baseball dream one more try and I went back to the US with three other Aussies and played over 100 games of semi professional baseball in Chicago. One of the four of us signed a professional contract but it wasnt me so I returned to Brisbane determined to become the best sports Acupuncturist in Australia.

Meanwhile I also continued playing ball and in 1988 I was co-captain of the Australian Baseball team that went on to play in the Seoul Olympics; certainly a highlight in any sporting career. In all I represented Australia for over ten years and played in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, the United States and Canada. I retired from competitive baseball in 1994 on a high note as member of the Brisbane Bandits, victorious in their first National Championship in the Australian Baseball League.
In my practice and continuing study I have devoted myself to understanding how the body works and have come to understand the core principle that the body was designed to be healthy. If we treat it right then it will heal anything!

I have a passion for making people well, firstly by treating their sporting injuries and musclo skeletal pain but also by addressing internal health and weight loss issues. These are two things that will compromise your health and prevent you from ever achieving true health and vitality.

Ive come to understand that its not only about being lean, fit and active but also being less stressed, more creative and confident and more energetic. This will ensure youre able to work longer and more productively and have energy leftover for the people you love.

Some comments from clients

"I was recommended to see Tony on the advice of a family member as an alternative treatment for my back alignment problem. The issue was that my back was out and cramped up all the muscles to protect the spine. I could hardly walk, bend or do any activities. After previously seeing a doctor, physio and muscular skeletal people for a period of a month, the result was only short term and my back alignment was still causing me grief. I went to see Tony and from the initial consultation he diagnosed the problem and treated accordingly with acupuncture, massages and exercises. Since then there has been rapid improvement and over a period of a month (same time frame as per other consultations), I am 100% with my back. I would recommend Tony to anyone who has a back problem as an alternative to the traditional methods, as it was the only treatment that had lasting results for myself."
- Sean, Brisbane

As a plumber I have a lot of work stress and back problems. I used to see Tony only when my back became really sore. It would take a week of treatment, lost work and severe pain before it would turn around. Tony mentioned to me his Wellness club and since Ive joined its been fantastic. I see Tony once a month, and hes kept me fit and well for years now. No more time off work or inconvenient pain. Even doing roofs and trenches, which would have once set off my back, I glide through with no pain. I wish Tony had mentioned it to me earlier. He has even helped me work on my diet to lose some excess weight.
- Brian, Kedron

What is Acupuncture?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been used effectively for over 5,000 years. Acupuncture is a form of TCM involving the stimulation of specific points in the body with the insertion of very fine needles to enhance the flow of chi (vital energy) along pathways called meridians. If chi is slowed or blocked by factors like injury, poor diet, stress or climate then physical or emotional illness often results.

What is Dry Needling?

The term dry needling has become more popular in recent years; it is a term most commonly used by non-acupuncturists, such as Physiotherapists, Massage Therapists even Podiatrists. These therapists have not completed the full course of study in Traditional Chinese Medicine but rather complete courses sometimes as short of a single weekend.
Registered Acupuncturists complete a full time 4 year Acupuncture and Health Science degree and most be accredited by the Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association (AACMA) to practice Acupuncture. Registered, certified Acupuncturists do not use the term dry needling.
