What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy is a whole medical system combining theory (philosophy and principles) and practice that uses an array of natural therapies to support healing and maintain health. Its core principle, “the healing power of nature”, guides the naturopath’s use of nutrition, dietary counseling, herbal medicine, manual therapies, flower essences, lifestyle education, homeopathy and other modalities to treat illness and restore health.

Naturopath’s are committed to the principle of “first, do no harm” and choose safe, effective and gentle natural treatments with few or no side effects. Naturopaths encourage patients to become actively involved in their health by understanding their strengths and weaknesses and taking responsibility for their own actions. They teach the patient how to optimise their health through adopting beneficial lifestyle habits, individualised eating plans, and regularly participating in activities which aid relaxation, stress reduction and self-care.

Course Overview

This four year full time (or equivalent part-time) course provides graduates with specialist naturopathic clinical knowledge and skills to become future leaders within the naturopathic profession. It includes in-depth studies in health science, research, herbal pharmacology and clinical herbal medicine, nutritional biochemistry and clinical nutrition/dietary medicine, clinical case taking, and communication and professional interaction.

Graduates are eligible for membership with a range of professional associations including:

• Australian Natural Therapists Association (ANTA)
  
• Australian Traditional Medicine Society (ATMS)
  
• Australian Naturopathic Practitioners Association (ANPA)
  
• National Herbalists Association Australia (NHAA)
