Welcome to Balmain Pilates Studio
The Pilates Method is a unique system of resistance training which uses springs and body weight to condition the physique. It provides the benefits of weight bearing exercise without the bulk!
Established in Balmain in 1999, Balmain Pilates Studio teaches True Pilates as handed down from Romana Krysanowska - Joe Pilates' protégé. All our Instructors are 2nd or 3rd Generation* by lineage. This means they trained directly with Romana or with one of her protégés.
After an initial consultation, we offer individually tailored Private and Duet classes in the Pilates System (all apparatus and mat) as well as small group Mat classes. Our beautiful waterfront studio is equipped with all the original Pilates apparatus – including reformers, chairs, cadillac, barrels and more. Classes cater for all fitness needs and age groups.

What makes us different? (*Lineage is essential)
Our instructors are certified by Romana’s Pilates, New York the worlds leading certification body for true Pilates. Graduates from Romana's Pilates are 2nd or 3rd Generation, which means that their training lineage comes directly from Joseph & Clara Pilates. This lineage ensures that we preserve the tradition of Joseph Pilates' original method & technique. Instructors undergo a 700 hour apprenticeship and must partake in annual re-certification programmes.Joseph Pilates' original system of over 500 exercises on the many different apparatus and mat is rigorously maintained.
Individual instruction is the key to success. When Pilates exercises are taught in large groups, the Method loses it’s precision and specificity – this makes it difficult to achieve results and to keep the workout safe.
At Balmain Pilates Studio, we pride ourselves on teaching the Pilates Method in its true and authentic form. Our traditional classes are taught one on one (Private) or one on two (duets). Mat classes are taught in closely supervised small groups and you need to participate in at least three private classes before joining a group mat.
Pilates has proven itself for more than 80 years as an effective and safe method of exercise. Joseph Pilates' original approach can work wonders when taught by a qualified instructor who understands how to develop and tailor a Pilates workout specific to an individuals body and capabilities.
Origins of Pilates
Developed in the 1920s by the legendary Joseph Pilates, the Pilates Method emphasizes the balanced development of what Joe called the "powerhouse". The powerhouse encompasses the abdominals, lower back, hips and buttocks. Nowadays you may hear the powerhouse referred to as the core or the centre.
Pilates believed that if your powerhouse was functioning fully then the rest of your body would be able to move with ease and natural grace, free from stress or strain on muscles and joints.
Joseph Pilates was a genius well beyond his time and developed a totally unique approach to fitness that includes over 500 exercises. He also designed a host of special apparatus to assist in teaching these exercises to a wide population with varied fitness capabilities and needs.
Through a series of rigorous and controlled exercises on the various apparatus and mat you lengthen, strengthen and realign the body with precise efficient movement. QUALIFICATION DETAILS
