OSTEOPATHY
1. What is Osteopathy?
NEWS: Emily Morgan is now available all day Tuesday as well as Thursday afternoon. Chrissy Bradley is available all day Wednesday. Timothy Stork every Monday and Tuesday and Denis Moffat every Tuesday and Friday afternoon.
Osteopathy is a form of manual medicine that focuses on a holistic body approach to the treatment of musculoskeletal pain.
Osteopathy uses a range of manual “hands on” techniques to correct altered biomechanics and restore function to restricted areas of the body’s framework, thus influencing the region of pain and other systems in the body.
2. What is the difference between Osteopathy and other medical disciplines?
The philosophy of osteopathy is what sets it apart from other medical disciplines.
Osteopathy concentrates not only on treating the problem area, but also looks at the whole body (above and below the area of pain).
This helps to determine the real cause of the problem and prevent or manage it effectively.
3. What does an Osteopathic treatment involve?
A complete medical history is taken with questions about the problematic area as well as lifestyle, diet, medication and past trauma.
The patient may then be asked to perform some simple movements and tests so the osteopath can observe any mobility impairment and evaluate posture.
Treatment could include such techniques as:
- soft tissue massage and stretching - to increase blood flow and improve flexibility of joints and muscles;
- articulation - taking joints passively through their range of motion, in order to mobilise them;
- muscle energy technique - alternately stretching muscles and making them work against resistance, to release tightness; and
- if needed, manipulative therapy to correct spinal biomechanics.
As osteopathy emphasises self-healing, an osteopath may also advise dietary changes, home exercise programs and lifestyle adjustments.
4. What conditions do Osteopaths commonly treat?
Patients present with a range of complaints including:
- headaches; back pain and sciatica; neck, hip, knee, foot/ankle pain;
- shin splints; tennis/golfer’s elbow; carpal tunnel syndrome; and repetitive strain injury;
- asthma; arthritis; digestive problems; whiplash and postural problems.
Osteopaths also deal regularly with patients who have been injured in the workplace, at home or while playing sport.
5. Who would go to see an Osteopath?
Osteopathy is safe for all age groups.
Osteopaths encourage individuals to proactively prevent injuries and ailments, leading to better overall health and less time and money spent on treatment.
6. Is Osteopathy covered by Health Funds?
All major health funds recognise osteopathy under their ancillary cover.
Osteopathy is acknowledged by Medicare Plus and attracts a rebate where a GP diagnoses a condition as chronic and provides a referral.
This months profile provided by Emily Morgan, one of our therapists.
Emily Morgan is a holistic manual therapist who adopts a structural approach to osteopathy through treatments aimed at restoring normality to the biomechanics of the body. She is competent in treating musculoskeletal conditions and has developed a strong interest in treating acute and chronic presentations of lower back and neck pain, restoration of pelvic and hip mechanics and associated disorders. She has completed her five year double degree with Masters in Osteopathy at the University of Western Sydney and is registered with both the NSW Osteopaths Registration Board and the Australian Osteopathic Association.

There are some quick, simple tests that can be done by Louise to help create a better picture of your state of health such as;
- Determining your blood type (O, A, AB, B) for the purposes of determining the best nutrition for you.
- Urinary Indican Test – a great way to analyse digestive health, especially leaky gut, and gut bacterial status
- Urinary Heavy Metal Test – can determine the presence and extent of heavy metal toxicity in your body (mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium)
- Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis kits can be provided to further examine the impact of heavy metals on your health , but also provides a comprehensive overview of your health by providing a detailed examination of your mineral status (including calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron)

BACH FLOWER ESSENCES
Stressed?
Anxious?
Having trouble making an important descision or lacking direction?
Do you have upcoming exams or a stressful event ahead of you?
Try a “Stress Relief “ hour – a Bach flower assessment combined with massage.
Bach flower remedies were developed by Dr Edward Bach, a well-respected Harley St doctor and homoeopath. Bach Flowers are a gentle, yet very effective way to take the edge of emotional pain. They are a great way to offer you support, so you can focus on getting on with the task at hand. Suitable for children, even babies, and animals as well, Bach Flowers can bring peace into our busy minds.
They are plant based remedies that help guide you through different emotional states gently. They do not interact with prescribed or over the counter medicines. They help bring clarity and give perspective to your current situation and feelings.
When you feel a difficult emotion, Bach flowers work by encouraging the corresponding positive quality that lies dormant within us. For example if you feel despondent, you would be advised to take an encouragement remedy so so you could leave the negative state behind. Or if you feel anxious you would take a remedy that would bring out your natural courage.
Bach flowers can be used to shift long term, chronic emotional states, or simply help you through a particular situation.
Recent research in the field of psychoneuroimmunology supports the views of Dr Bach and others like him, that emotions have a decisive impact on physical health. Psychoneuroimmunology is the biological link between emotional health and the immune system.
A consultation involves a confidential conversation between the client and the practitioner. Listening to how you feel about your current situation and allowing you to open up in your own time, is the cornerstone to selecting a remedy.
There are 38 flower essences in the Bach flower range, each one relating to a different, emotional state. Depending on your situation and the overwhelming emotion effecting you at a specific time, individual Bach Flowers (usually up to 5) can be chosen for you and combined in the one, easy to take dropper bottle. They are virtually tasteless and can work rapidly to calm things down.
Call Sharon at the centre for more information 9708 4338.
We are open 6 days a week by appointment.
