WHAT IS MYOTHERAPY?
"Myotherapy is the assessment, diagnosis, & treatment of musculoskeletal pain complaints which can originate from muscles, joints, fascia, & other structures of your body".
Myotherapy doesn't just involve the treatment of muscles, but also involves detailed assessment and treatment of the spine itself through mobilisation.
In western medicine, musculoskeletal pain is often masked with pain killers and anti-inflammatories, not addressing the source of the pain. Myotherapy aims to address the cause of your pain, not simply to hide your symptoms. For example, headaches can be caused by abnormal muscle contraction in the muscles of the neck and shoulders, or by misalignment of the vertebrae in the neck causing nerve impingement. Pain kilelrs only mask the pain but the misalignments and muscle contractions will still remain, causing pain a short time later. Myotherapy, through spinal mobilisation and muscle release (in particular Trigger Point release), aims to address the main source of the symptoms, so that the pain does not return again.

TOPIC OF THE MONTH- SCIATICA
Sciatica is known to many of us, possibly having suffered from it at one stage or another. Sciatica to many is known as the sensation of feeling pain down your leg/s and/or gluteals, sometimes as far down as to our calves or ankles.
Sciatica can be caused by a range of different contributing factors, however as the name suggests, it is most likely due to an interference or impingement of the sciatic nerve that exits from your spine in the lower back, and courses into your gluteals and into our leg.
When this nerve is impinged, it can send pain down the leg to varying intensities. Alternatively, the nerve can also be impinged b abnormally contracted muscles in the gluteal region such as the Piriformis muscles, which as it tightens more and more, and can have a 'choking'or 'squashing' effect on the nerve hence producing the radiating pain. Similarly, Trigger Points found in muscles surrounding the gluteal and hip region can also refer pain down the leg, which patients may still describe as sciatica. These are just a couple of factosr that can cause sciatica.
Whatever the causative factor, Myotherapy can help. To find out how, call Eleni today or email for more information.
