Welcome to Border MBSR
The Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course is an eight week experiential programme that teaches mindfulness based meditation and gentle yoga practices with the intent of improving the quality of your life. The course is based on the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program established by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre in 1979. MBSR has an extensive research basis and has been shown to be helpful in reducing stress and enhancing well-being.
Mindfulness can be defined as “Paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgementally.” (Kabat-Zinn, 1994). The development of mindfulness can lead to a greater sense of ease that is nurtured through a direct and open relationship to things as they are. This can help to cut through reactive ways of thinking and acting, and allow space for more creative ways of participating in your own life to emerge.
Research conducted by the University of Massachusetts Medical School has shown that MBSR course participants have developed :
- An increased ability to relax
- Reductions in pain levels and an enhanced ability to cope with pain that may not go away
- Greater energy and enthusiasm for life
- Improved self-esteem
- An ability to cope more effectively with both short and long-term stressful situations
The course is suitable for both the absolute beginner and for those wishing to further explore their meditation practice in an open and supportive environment. Each weekly class runs for two hours and there is a full-day class held on a weekend. Participants will receive a workbook and four CDs containing guided meditation practices.
