Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging (DITI) is fast becoming widely used by medical practitioners and other therapist to assist with diagnosis and follow-up treatment and as an adjunct tool to other screening tests. DITI can detect precursors to heart disease breast disease, vascular obstruction, auto-immune disorders, skeletal and neural disfunction.
Following her training at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina USA, as Clinical Thermographer, Julia has opened the first Meditherm Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging clinic in regional Victoria/NSW. She has purchased the very latest in State of the Art thermographic equipment which will opitimise screening results for the local community.

At last we can offer a safer, non-invasive method of early detection of abnormalities and potential disease in the body.

Julia operates a permanent clinic in Albury and a mobile clinic monthly in Armadale, St Kilda, and Shepparton.

WHAT IS DIGITAL INFRARED THERMAL IMAGING?

DITI, or Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging, is a noninvasive test that allows a health practitioner to see and measure changes in skin surface temperature. An infrared scanning camera translates infrared radiation emitted from the skin surface and records them on a color monitor. This visual image graphically maps the body temperature and is referred to as a thermogram. The spectrum of colors indicates an increase or decrease in the amount of infrared radiation being emitted from the body surface. In healthy people, there is a symmetrical skin pattern which is consistent and reproducible for any individual.

DITI is highly sensitive and can therefore be used clinically to detect disease in the vascular, muscular, neural and skeletal systems.

DITI has been used extensively in human medicine in the United States, Europe and Asia for the past 20 years. Until now, bulky equipment has hindered its diagnostic and economic feasibility. Now, PC-based infrared technology designed specifically for clinical application has changed all this.

Clinical uses for DITI include,
- defining the extent of a lesion of which a diagnosis has previously been made (for example, vascular disease);
- localizing an abnormal area not previously identified, so further diagnostic tests can be performed (as in Irritable Bowel Syndrome);
- detecting early lesions before they are clinically evident (as in breast cancer or other breast diseases); and
- monitoring the healing process before a patient returns to work or training (as in workman's compensation claims).

Medical DITI is filling the gap in clinical diagnosis- X-ray, Computed Tomography, Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), are tests of anatomy or structure. E.M.G. is a test of motor physiology.

DITI is unique in its capability to show physiological or functional changes and metabolic processes. It has also proven to be a very useful complementary procedure to other diagnostic procedures.

Medical DITI can show a combined effect of the autonomic nervous system and the vascular system, down to capillary dysfunctions. The effects of these changes reveal an asymmetry in temperature distribution on the surface of the body.

DITI is a monitor of thermal abnormalities present in a number of diseases and physical injuries. It is used as an aid for diagnosis and prognosis, as well as therapy follow up and rehabilitation monitoring, within clinical fields that include rheumatology, neurology, physiotherapy, sports medicine, oncology, pediatrics, orthopedics and many others.

Results obtained with medical DITI systems are totally objective and show excellent correlation with other diagnostic tests.

BENEFITS OF DITI IN MONITORING BREAST HEALTH

DITI of the breast provides information of inflammatory changes within the breast which along with self examination, physician palpation and mammography can help monitor breast health status. .DITI is a non invasive test. This means there is no contact with the body of any kind, no radiation and the procedure is painless. This 15min test is a valuable adjunctive tool for alerting gynecologists and primary care physicians to the possibility of underslying breast disease. This test is designed to improve chances for detection of fast-growing, active tumours in the intervals between mammographic screenings or when mammography is not indicated for women under 50 years of age.

DITI is especially appropriate for younger women under 50 whose denser breast tissue makes more difficult for mammography to pick up suspicious lesions.

DITI detects subtle physiologic changes that accompany breast pathology, where it is cancer, fibrocystic disease, and infection or vascular disease.

Thermal Imaging's most important role is in the comparative analysis. Changes from one screening to the next indicate abnormal activity and predictable risk. The first screening is only a baseline. It's the follow-up comparative images that provide the most valuable information. We call this analysis "Monitoring for Change".

DITI scan is taken with the latest state of art medical infrared camera, which is then stored and sent by electronic mail to a central data-base where a thermologist or radiologist can perform statistical analysis. Reports are colour printed and sent to the patients physician/specialist.

Examination recall is dependant on Thermogram result, age, previous history and risk group and can be 3 monthly, 6 monthly or 12 monthly.All patients thermograms are kept on record and form a base line for all future routine evaluations.

Thermal Imaging is NOT for the detection of late stage breast cancer. It is used to HELP PREVENT breast disease getting to that stage.
