Bowen Therapy is used to treat a wide range of health conditions, such as painful muscular and skeletal disorders, traumatic injuries, stress, chronic illness, pregnancy discomfort and childhood disorders. Studies report it as effective for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Multiple Sclerosis and Asthma.

What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy is a Remedial treatment that is gentle and non invasive. It activates the body's innate healing ability and is applied to treat a broad range of physical ailments, as it addresses the musculoskeletal framework, the fascia, nerves and internal organs.

The body's integrated response improves circulation and lymphatic drainage, and aids in the assimilation of nutrients and elimination of toxins. As Bowen is extremely gentle it is safe to use on anyone from pregnant women to newborns, the frail to the elderly for any complaint from sports injuries to chronic or organic conditions.

Bowen facilitates the balancing of a range of conditions. It aims to treat the whole person. Bowen balances the physical, mental and emotional planes. As Bowen addresses the entire body holistically, you may experience improvements in conditions that you forgot to mention to your practitioner, even if the area affected is located far from where the practitioner is working on you.

It is a natural, gentle, fast and effective treatment which produces an integrated body response, improving circulation, lymphatic and venous drainage, helping assimilate nutrients and eliminate toxins. It has been shown to successfully address:

  • Back and Hip problems

  • Neck and Shoulder problems

  • RSI

  • Restrictions in Arm movement

  • Migraines/Headaches

  • Sports injuries

  • Hay Fever/Allergies/Respiratory ailments

  • Gastro-Intestinal complaints

  • ADHD

  • Bed wetting in children

  • Lymphatic drainage

  • And many other ailments
However, one doesn't need to be unwell to benefit from a Bowen treatment, it works on all levels and can help to balance the body in order for it to function at an optimal level.

Benefits of Bowen:
  • Relief is often experienced after the first session

  • Appropriate for all ages and degrees of health

  • Helps re-align posture

  • Relieves stress and anxiety

  • Improves cellular, organ and lymphatic function

  • Relieves pregnancy discomfort

What to Expect from a Bowen Treatment:
A treatment offers fast and lasting relief from pain and discomfort and a return to balance and harmony in the body. The Bowen technique is a 'Hands-on' - 'Hands-off' treatment. A treatment application comprises of small but precise moves on specific points of the body using thumbs or fingers, rolling over soft tissue-muscle-tendon-ligaments.

There is NO forceful manipulation, just a gentle cross fibre maneuvering of a muscle, tendon or ligament. Various amounts of pressures are applied depending on the location and needs of the client. In between each set of moves, there are short delays incorporated to allow the body to effectively respond. The location of the moves is dependent on the needs of the client and is extremely relaxing and gentle; the treatment can be performed through light loose fitting clothing if preferred.

Bowen is not an ongoing therapy. Substantial relief is frequently attained after the first session, with most people requiring only 2 - 4 treatments, at weekly intervals, to resolve their presenting problem. Except in the case of chronic illness or repeat injury where several sessions at weekly intervals may be required. It is reported that Bowen improves range of movement, flexibility and postural alignment and is known to improve muscle function for sports performance.

After Treatment Care:
After your Bowen treatment, it is strongly advised that you do not have any other physical therapy or other forms of manipulation - such as massage, Chiropractic, Physiotherapy, Acupuncture or Kinesiology for up to one week after the treatment. These things may undo the balance achieved through your Bowen treatment.

Your body will continue the corrective healing process for up to 7 days following your session.
For the first week after your treatment, it is advised that you:

  • Avoid excessive heat or cold to areas that have been treated - e.g. do not stand under the shower with hot water directed at your neck or back.

  • Stop using an electric blanket or hot water bottle

  • Have lukewarm, not hot baths

  • Avoid sitting for any longer than 30 minutes at a time on the day of your visit

  • Increase your intake of water consumption as is comfortable to help flush and eliminate the toxins and waste from your body
On rare occasions, reactions may be experienced from hot and cold flushes, emotional releases, headaches and body aches or just feeling a little 'flat'. These reactions are a positive sign that the healing process is working and will generally subside within the first 24 hours. Each person responds differently at differing rates and to different degrees.
You will respond according to your body's ability to heal.
