Bowen Therapy @ Tony's
So, what is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy, also known as Bowtech® or Bowenwork®, is a very gentle form of natural healing. It really needs to be experienced to be appreciated.
Bowen Therapy comprises a series of light, gentle “moves” applied to specific points on the body with significant time pauses between each series of moves. These “time out” periods between moves are to allow the body to respond and incorporate what is being done. I usually leave the room during these pauses to allow the client to relax and not feel obliged to hold conversation or feel they are being observed. Pause lengths may vary from person to person and condition to condition.
So, in effect, if you are my client – I will use my fingers and thumbs to “lightly” move over muscles, ligaments and tendons and sometimes, directly over nerves themselves to evoke a healing response in your body.
On 99% of occasions, the client will let him/herself go into a deep state of relaxation and sometimes actually go to sleep – and this is good, too.
Whilst I prefer to work directly upon the skin, I can perform the Bowen moves through light clothing. When you do come – either wear or bring very light clothing, or be happy to be treated in your “undies” under the cover of warm drapes.
OK, now why should you/I have Bowen Therapy? Well, you “don’t have to be ill” or have some form of body crisis to have Bowenwork – although most of my clients do come to me with specific issues; others come because no other health practitioner has been able to help them with their problem. If you are not sick or injured, a three to four weekly Bowen session is good to maintain your body balance and sense of well- being – “Everybody is better with Bowen”.
Your first visit is of two parts – initial interview and discussion of your body and any issues or problems you may currently have and then first treatment which is basically a relaxation and body balance routine; depending on what issues you present with as to whether I continue and address these, or bring you back for follow up treatment.
We will discuss and arrange all this before you leave. First visits often take up to 60 minutes and follow-ups from 30 to 45 minutes, depending on your unique situation.
I like to start off with three consecutive visits – this is a good time frame to assess the effectiveness of your Bowen treatment; you may or may not need to come back after this. Many clients return every three to four weeks for a “tune-up” session which seems to re-balance, relax and re-focus them and help keep them “on track”.
Specific issues Bowen Therapy is good for:
Sports injuries, back pain and sciatica, neck and shoulder problems, knee and ankle problems, menstrual problems, migraines and headaches, respiratory conditions and hayfever, pregnancy and childhood disorders, digestive problems, TMJ irregularities, plantar fasciitis, RSI/OOU and tennis elbow - - and many, many more.
I have a special interest in Senior Cits and Aged Care clients and those among you who may have cancer – to me, cancer is not a death sentence but a life challenge; we may not beat it but we can give it our best shot and try to achieve some emotional release and calmness plus some comfort and ease as well. It is important to remember that Bowen Therapy is NOT a cure for anything but it does frequently offer pain and emotional relief where other modalities have failed.
Bowen Therapy is appropriate for newborn babes through to the elderly and infirm.
Where did Bowen Therapy come from?
The Bowen Technique was originally developed by a man from Geelong in the 1950’s and 60’s – Thomas Ambrose Bowen, now deceased (1916-1982).
Tom Bowen was enchanted by the different stances people had and how these stances related to symptoms of illness or body pain.
Whilst Tom Bowen was initially a manual worker, he was also a person with a natural healing ability; he was quick to observe how people sat, moved and walked and could pretty much assess their problems at that time. Tom Bowen’s wonderful therapy appears to be a “Gift from God” as he had no formal training beforehand; sadly, Tom Bowen succumbed to illness and passed away in 1982 – Vale Tom Bowen.
In this year of 2009, in excess of 12,000 therapists worldwide have been trained in “Bowtech – the Original Bowen Therapy”.
Success Stories.
Kerry Ann (real name withheld) a 41 year old active mother with two equally active children came to me after an episode in the garden where she jarred herself with a spade against a hard surface in the ground – the shock wave went through her body and created a painful area in her low back radiating to the right hip and thigh, specifically the greater trochanter. This made daily activities rather painful, especially sitting and standing – getting in and out of the car and driving. After performing a basic body balance and relaxation sequence I then addressed the pelvis and hamstrings – at the end of the treatment, dressed and ready to go, she suddenly looked at me and exclaimed: “The pain’s gone – I feel better already!” Kerry Ann came back for two follow up treatments, and to date the hip and thigh pain has not returned.
Trudy (real name withheld) a 55 year old clerical administrative worker came to me with a history of long standing migraine headaches. Whilst standard over the counter medications gave some relief, she was looking for “something” that might give a more lasting effect. I suggested three consecutive treatments – with just a basic balance and relaxation, pelvis and hamstrings on the first session – we would address the migraines specifically on the follow up sessions. On her second visit Trudy informed me that her migraines had been ‘less intense’. Shortly after her third visit, I received an e-mail thanking me and advising that this day was the first in a long, long time that she had woken and begun the day head ache free.
Netty May (real name withheld) an 86 year old war widow asked me to help her if I could. Netty lives alone in a retirement village and has numerous medical conditions particularly arterio-venous issues – partial obstruction in neck and iliac arteries; severe thrombo-phlebitis of both lower legs – Netty had been experiencing scary, unannounced dizzy spells and feinting sometimes whilst out and away from home.
She also had a funny discomfort under her left ‘bottom’ when she was seated and an annoying pain in her left under-foot especially when walking. As you would expect with a lady of this age, there are also many arthritic issues with shoulders, elbows, knees, hips, neck etc with reduced range on movements at the joints.
We worked out a strategy of procedures and, so far, after a series of 6 home visits addressing various problem areas, Netty reports that her pain in the bottom has gone; the pain in her foot has gone; a tightness in her in thoracic spine area has gone; the pain she had in her left hip has gone; movement at her neck and shoulders has improved considerably; she is walking more erect now and uses the wheelie-walker a lot less; her breathing has improved – which really pleases her as she has recently taken up singing. In general, Netty May has become “hooked-on-Bowen” as she has never felt better.
Finally, Josh (real name withheld) a 51 year old process shift worker came to me
with problems in both shoulders, especially the right – X-rays were clear but the ultrasound showed normal tendons and sub-deltoid bursitis. Whilst Josh could use his left arm fairly well, his right arm gave him ‘heaps’ of trouble – pain factor was 7 out of 10 (10 being maximum pain). So I balanced and relaxed Josh same as I had done with the others and then addressed the shoulders full on – Josh has had 9 visits so far, several just follow ups, but on his last visit on 18th June, pain factor was 2 out of 10 on the right and 1 out of 10 on the left and has been holding there for several weeks.
Josh is one very happy person now and returns frequently for a “tune up”.
Testimonials.
I am extremely happy I was introduced bowen therapy treatments. Doctors were unable to help me with my severe back except for pain medications. After a few treatments of bowen therapy with Tony
now have wonderful relief and also my general health and well-being has also improved. I can truly recommend bowen therapy as a non-invasive and natural healing method.

I am 55 years young and have suffered with migranes all my life. At the end of 2008 I started waking up every morning with severe headaches and/or migraines. I have been living on Nurophen+ and Imigran (migraine medication) to make it through the day. It got to a stage I was averaging one day a week off work and dragged myself to work the other days. I was very concerned about loosing my job.
I tried chiropractor, doctors and even saw a psychiatrist. Then one of the girls at work mentioned Tony and his Bowen therapy. I was ready to try anything. If I had a gun I would have used that too.
Following my first treatment with Tony I felt nausea and not at all well for two days. I went back because I understand that was all the toxins being released from my body and Tony had suggested. 3 treatments, a week apart to get results. After the second treatment I only woke with the headaches, maybe three or four days out of the seven and only had one migraine that week. I also found that the migraine was not as severe and after my imigran (migraine medication) kicked in I felt much better than normal, normal for a migraine sufferer that is.
Following my third visit, I woke up the following morning feeling well and in my element all that day and the next and the next because I’d forgotten how it felt to feel well.
Thank you Tony.

The simple excercises you had me perform with some difficulty I can now easily improve on from 90 deg to 180 deg movement in just a few hours, amazing!! I can’t remeber the last time I felt so well, I’m looking forward to my next visit on Weds 7th, you have my complete faith, this therapy must exceed all bounds, I’m boosted. I can’t wait to see how it helps other ailments.

Hi Tony,
Thanks again, within 24 hrs my knee pain has significantly reduced after Bowen treatment without any drugs or painkillers. Gottabegood does’nt it!!
Cheers, David.
1 have been attending Bowen With Tony for 2 years now and I’m still working in my trade. I have a compressed disk @ L5- Si and I’m in constant pain with varying intensity from day to day.
I also have the Osteoarthritis starting in my hip joints as well as migraines and neck pain. I have bee taking drugs, had acupuncture, seen sports therapists and rehabilitative massage and chiropractic.
Now I’m on very minimal drugs and more natural alternatives, mixed with the work that Tony performs on a fortnightly bases and I have felt the best I have ever felt in 15 years.
Tony has a warm and caring nature and he will go out of his way to help me to understand my problem and manage it with some changes in my lifestyle and work ethic. If you’re going to give this a go, then you need to persist and not expect the one treatment cure.

Sorry it took so long to get this to you, things have been very hectic. Thanks for your help I appreciate it I feel as though your work has helped me so much. I hope this helps you, feel free to alter it in any way you feel necessary.
My name is Damien, I was weight training for about seven or eight months, until an elbow injury brought that to a grinding halt. I also had hamstring and lower back problems holding me back too. After many visits to a physio, I had some improvement, but was still nowhere near capable to continue training. I was at work and told a colleague about my frustration and he recommended I try bowen therapy. After a bit of looking around on the web I found Tony, decided to give it a try and booked to see him. I was amazed at his knowledge of the human anatomy, he told me what he was going to do how it works and after a few visits, I noticed a change, I noticed improvement. After my third visit I was back training lightly, and gradually was able to build up almost to where I was. After my fourth visit I was back training hard again, I didn’t have any hiccups and didn’t have any setbacks for a few months. I had planned to see Tony for a fifth visit, it was about two months after my fourth, and now I feel better than ever, and I am training harder than I ever have, and I believe Tony’s treatment is the major factor. I highly recommend Tony’s treatment it is in a relaxing environment, done very professionally by a very nice man that’s also very good at what he does. If you have any niggles holding you back give Tony’s bowen a try, maybe he could help you the way helped me?

A Little Bit About Me.
I am Tony Doré, some of you know me already; some of you are also current clients of mine. Many of you have also seen me in my other area of Health Care in Browns Plains where I work as a licensed and registered Radiographer (Medical Imaging Technologist). My history with X-Rays goes back over nearly 45 years – I began my training at the Royal Hobart Hospital in Tasmania, came up to Brisbane and worked at the (then) Greenslopes Repatriation Hospital for just on 20 years until it was sold to private enterprise. I am now in (part-time) Private Practice with lots of experience in General Radiographic Imaging and some recent experience in CT.
It has always been a dream of mine to ‘heal with my hands’ and the actuality of this dream has been ever elusive – until now. In 2007 my wife had some Bowen Therapy which turned out to be the only hands on treatment offered by a body worker that actually worked and held as a treatment. (Bowen worked where others failed).
The same Bowen Therapist, who also worked on me, suggested that this therapy would be good for me – that is, I should learn Bowen because she felt or just knew that Bowen and I were destined to come together – my comment at the time was something like “Me? You’re kidding. No way!” Not interested. However, being a typical female (in the nicest way) she didn’t give up, but continually kept reminding me of this possibility along with my spouse who also kept urging me to consider this new way of life. Two women who saw in me that which interested me not.
However, fate had other plans – the opportunity presented itself to me quite suddenly last year in 2008 and I now have my Certificate IV in Bowen Therapy and registered memberships with the Bowen Association of Australia and the Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia.
So, to the two Sues in my life, you know who you are, thanks for the pushing and your belief and trust that you knew I would succeed; and thanks, also, to Desley (my fabulous teacher) who also helped change my way of thinking and got me to this point. And to Tom Bowen through his dedication and passion gave to the world this unbelievable, complimentary therapeutic treatment. Praise be, I now have my “healing hands”.
