The Buteyko Method of breathing retraining which Mary teaches is suitable for children from three years of age and adults of any age. It has been taught in Australia for over twenty years to alleviate breathing problems and is also used to enhance sports performance.

Breathing assessment using the latest scientific equipment is available at the Buteyko Bayside Breathing Centre. In this non-invasive assessment, heart rate, breathing rate and rhythm as well as end-tidal carbon dioxide are measured. Immediate feedback is provided as the results can be viewed on a computer screen. In hyperventilation or over-breathing, excessive amounts of carbon dioxide are exhaled.
The instrument used – the CapnoTrainer® – is not intended for medical diagnosis or treatment, but is an educational instrument designed to enhance performance through learning and teaching good breathing behaviour.

About the Practitioner Mary Birch RN BA M.BioE Grad.Dip.Soc MBIBH
Mary worked as a nurse and also as a nurse educator and clinical teacher in the UK, Central Africa and in Australia for 20 years before becoming a breathing retraining consultant. As a nurse she cared for people suffering from asthma in a number of acute care settings, and has also worked on a chest and respiratory unit.
