Buteyko Works!
Breathing is your most basic requirement for balance and good health, yet it is the least likely to be considered simply because it is so basic. Breathing affects every cell in your body and, like blood pressure; it is easy for breathing to become abnormal without you being aware of it. When this happens, you develop a condition that is called 'hidden hyperventilation', upsetting the basic rhythm of life and consequently your body works less efficiently.
The Buteyko Works programme is a total approach to health, including the special Buteyko breathing techniques and principles about exercise, nutrition and sleeping that Dr. Konstantin Buteyko considered vital to good health.
The programme restores a normal breathing pattern and in doing so, the symptoms of asthma, allergies, blocked nose, insomnia, snoring, sleep apnoea, panic and hyperventilation attacks improve substantially.
Buteyko practitioners, Russell and Jennifer Stark, have taught the method to thousands of people around the world since September 1993. Today they hold their Buteyko classes in Brisbane.
Understanding Hyperventilation
Dr. Buteyko considered that the 'Disease of Deep Breathing' to be the root cause of many health conditions. Breathing incorrectly causes symptoms that are similar to those found in other conditions, and so sometimes a misdiagnosis occurs, or hyperventilation aggravates existing conditions. For example, hyperventilation causes narrowed airways, tightened smooth muscle and an increase in mucus production. These symptoms are also symptoms of asthma. One of two things happens:
1. Instead of being correctly diagnosed with dysfunctional breathing, the person is misdiagnosed with asthma, and as a consequence of this and the use of conventional treatments, the condition deteriorates. Or
2. The person has asthma, but hyperventilation makes it worse.
In either case, restoring a normal breathing pattern will go a long way towards improving the health of this person.
Asthma is not the only thing that Buteyko helps
A poor breathing pattern is also associated with other problems such as snoring, sleep apnoea, allergies, hayfever and panic attacks. The classes taught by Russell and Jennifer Stark assist you to have sound, silent sleep, and reduce the disturbing symptoms of stress.
