What is Bowen Therapy?
It is a series of very gentle moves across muscles, tendons or ligaments.
These moves follow a specific order and include frequent pauses to allow the muscles to rehydrate which allows them to relax and your body to rebalance.
As well as rebalancing, the Bowen moves pave the way for a re-alignment of the body. They reduce nerve pressure and promote healing.
Why and how does Bowen Therapy work?
Our bodies consists of 70% of water – yet what do we feed our body? Tea, coffee, Coke, beer, wine (alcohol in general), soft drinks, juices etc. Many of these are diuretics which means that they dehydrate us even more! As we grow older, a gradual loss of our thirst reflex occurs, so we drink less water and our body becomes drier still. Is it any coincidence that many of us become also less and less flexible as we age? Could dehydration perhaps contribute to stiffer joints?
Explaining Bowen Therapy in more detail
Bowen Therapy involves gentle movements of the skin and fascia which is a sheath of connective tissue under the skin that covers the entire body from the top of our head to the tip of our toes.
Because we are composed of 70% water, our muscles, organs, etc are like pressurised bags of water and it is the fascia that literally holds them all together and holds us up.
This is because fascia also surrounds all the muscles, tendons, organs as well as nerves and all other tissues. Now the really amazing part is that all of these different fascias are connected to all the other fascias.
So by contacting and moving the outside fascia, called the superficial fascia, you can have an effect on the inner fascias like those that cover the organs.
Fascia contains a series of interlaced fibres bathed in fluid. Just like fishing nets left on a beach, those fibres can get stuck together when the fascia dries out due to dehydration. The presence of protein sugars within the fluid means that the fascia can be stimulated like a crystal and so assist in the process of returning it to a more hydrated state.
This can be likened to stirring a set jelly into a liquid state. Non hydrated fascia is like the set jelly or unstirred household paint and has very little flexibility. This gives the feeling of being stiff and less mobile. Remember this fascia surrounds the muscles and if it is shrunken from trauma or dehydration the muscles will be less able to stretch and move to their full potential.
We can wake our dehydrated fascia up by applying the correct amount of pressure at the correct angle, called a vector, on the liquid crystal and this has a stimulating effect called the piezoelectric effect. This causes the stuck fibres within the fascia to come apart and allow the water to flow within, much like opening up a fishing net. The spaces are opened and invite the fluids in. Once the fascia has been stretched, the nerves and small blood vessels which are housed within are able to operate much more efficiently. This then will improve a person’s overall wellbeing, sometimes dramatically.
A Bowen Treatment assists the body to take the pressure off the joints and bones because it literally plumps up the surrounding tissues much like soaking dried fruit in water. With the pressure removed from the joints and bones, the pain levels in an injured back or joint can be reduced and allow for healing to take place.
The vital role of water
There are a number of diseases, especially those that have been long term as being basically caused by dehydration, from headaches to lower back pain and many more.
When connective tissue is well hydrated, it is slippery. However, when it dries up, it behaves like cling wrap: Allow two sheets of dry cling wrap to touch and they cling to each other, you cannot shift them. But if one of them is wet, they will not stick. The water allows the two sheets slip and slide.
Our fascia behaves just like that. Water makes it flexible and slippery. Arms and legs move easily and effortlessly, because they are well oiled with water. With too little water, the fascia adheres to surrounding tissue and movements become harder to make and require more energy - and pain is often the end result.
Remember that Bowen Therapy plays a very important role in rehydrating the body in conjunction with drinking sufficient water.
Water is essential for many processes in the body, including messages being conducted along the nerve pathways.
What conditions is Bowen Therapy used for?
Muscle and joint problems, e.g. tennis elbow, painful shoulders, arms and hands,

Restricted movement in upper or lower back, neck, hips, legs including sciatica, feet including bunions, frozen shoulders, RSI in arms and hands
Exhaustion,Chronic Fatigue Syndrome,Glandular fever
Menstral irregularities and breast pain
Asthma, hay fever, sinus problems or congestion
Headaches and migraines, dizziness, neck pain
Indigestion, reflux and sluggish digestive systems, colic in infants
Sport injuries including sprains, strains and tendonitis

What happens after a Bowen Therapy treatment?
After a treatment most people feel good and notice improvement. Bowen moves create changes in our body and we can never predict how you will feel after a treatment. It may well be different from treatment to treatment. Occasionally, people feel sore or washed out or they may feel they have had a real work-out. That usually happens only after the first treatment if the person is very dehydrated. After that, the body learns how to respond to Bowen Therapy and people generally feel positive effects only.
The effect of Bowen Therapy can be immediate and continual.
If you think about a garden, when the soil is well conditioned and moist, the plants grow well and all is good. But if the soil dries out and is neglected, the whole garden suffers. Our bodies are a little like a garden. It’s important to make sure water is always available to allow our bodies to nurture and repair themselves naturally. How do we do that? By drinking it, of course!
How many treatments are necessary?
Initial results are often felt after the first treatment and quite often one treatment is sufficient. However, I usually recommend 2, 3 or 4 treatments if a condition is stubborn. By then I should know if Bowen Therapy is making a difference in your particular case.
If there is no change after three or four treatments, then either Bowen Therapy is not the right way or I am not the right Bowen Therapist for you.
In most cases Bowen Therapy contributes to solving a problem significantly.
Contributing to your own recovery and not repeatedly re-injuring yourself by continuing with old habits is also going to help. That’s why I also advise you on diet and supplements, exercise, work/life balance and the importance of drinking adequate water. Your contribution is most helpful for success.
I will do my best to raise your awareness with regard to your particular condition – it is your choice what you do with the information received.
A lot of my clients use Bowen Therapy for maintenance and body balancing but most of them came originally with a specific issue such as sore joints or lower back pain. They almost always feel relief after treatment.
Testimonials
I have found Carolyn has a unique and effective style that supports the body to heal and correct in a gentle, relaxing manner. Combined with her knowledge of holistic health, Carolyn has been able to support me on my journey of recovery with enjoyment and confidence whilst catering to my individual needs. I highly recommend Carolyn as a Bowen and Holistic Health Therapist.
thank you,
Dale, Casino.
Thanks to Carolyn for all the work you have done with me treating my MS symptoms with regular Bowen Therapy. I found that it helped me physically by keeping everything 'moving' the way it is supposed to and it also helped me to cope with general day to day stress and fatigue. I don't think I could have returned to work or continued in the way I have without your ongoing assistance. You're a lifesaver.
Julie, Evans Head.
I first came to see Carolyn my shoulder had been stiff for over a year after a nasty fall. I couldn’t lift my arm high enough to even brush my hair. It was very frustrating. I also had a nagging lower back pain that seemed to always be with me.
After my first treatment, my back felt a lot better and after another two more treatments I was pain free and I could lift my arm right up like before my fall. It was wonderful and I have continued to see Carolyn every month or so for a maintenance treatment. I have a lot happening in my life and I want to be fit and healthy to fit it all in. Thanks Carolyn! Marie, Empire Vale.
I am 85 and Carolyn was kind enough to come to my home for my treatments. When she first treated me I had recently returned from a trip to England and I was suffering terrible jet lag and a very sore back.
Carolyn took her time with the treatment and stayed for an interesting chat afterwards. When she left I could hardly wait to go to bed and that night I slept through the night for the first time in over 2 weeks.
I woke refreshed and my back was much easier. I now have no back pain and Carolyn has also helped me with my sinuses as I suffer from allergies. Thank you Carolyn.
Joan, Lennox Head.
I hurt my elbow badly and a friend recommended I see Carolyn about it. I was still in a lot of pain when I came to see Carolyn but even after that first treatment my pain was much better. My elbow has continued to improve and along with it my ability to cope with the stresses of everyday life. I credit Carolyn with helping me not only with my elbow pain but with improving my work/life balance. I have recommended Carolyn to others. Many thanks.
Jacquie, Broadwater.
I lift horse’s legs in my job as a farrier and although I’m very fit, some large horses can give me a pain in my upper back and shoulders. I was working on Carolyn’s horse and complaining about a large horse that had given me back pain. She said she might be able to help so I tried Bowen for the first time.
The treatment felt good and really relaxing and I felt relief as soon as I got off the table. Over the next few days my back and shoulders felt better and better.
I would definitely go to Carolyn again if I get any future pain.
Graham, Alstonville.
I have a congenital back problem that caused pain which radiated to my sacral area. I had tried physio and acupuncture with some short-term success but since Carolyn treated me my pain seems to be gone for good. I couldn’t quite believe it at first but it’s been several months now. Thank you so much Carolyn for my new pain-free life.
Sue, Kenmore Hills.
I wanted a massage because I was so stressed from work and aching all over. As there was no massage therapist available, I decided to give Carolyn's gentle Bowen treatment a go.
It was so relaxing I fell asleep on the table and felt so much better after the treatment.
Thanks Carolyn, I feel very good today after treatment. Kind Regards,
Linda, Forster.
Carolyn's Bowen Lymphatic drainage has been the only treatment to reduce the pain of my polymylagia. She takes her time and is very conscious of my needs - even coming to my home after my hip operation to give me treatments. I have told all my friends about her. Thank you Carolyn.
