What is Massage?..... and how does it work?

Massage

Massage is one of the oldest, simplest forms of therapy and is a system of stroking, pressing and kneading different areas of the body to relieve pain, relax, stimulate, and tone the body. Massage does much more than create a pleasant sensation on the skin, it also works on the soft tissues(the muscles, tendons, and ligaments) to improve muscle tone. Massage also stimulates blood circulation and assists the lymphatic system (which runs parallel to the circulatory system), improving the elimination of waste throughout the body. Massage can stimulate or calm the nervous system-depending upon what is required by the individual-and thus help reduce fatigue, leaving the reciever with a feeling of replenished energy.

Therapy

There are many different types of massage, including deep tissue, sports massage, hot stone , aromatherapy , lymphatic drainage, trigger point therapy ,craniosacral therapy, neuromuscular therapy and myofascial release, watsu Rolfing, reflexology , Shiatsu, Thai Massage and Ayurvedic massage like abhyanga. Massage therapy involves the manipulation and rubbing of the soft tissues of the body, with particular focus on muscles and pressure points. Massage therapy may be used as part of physical therapy, or on its own to help relax areas where muscles are tight. In other cases, massage therapy may focus on pressure points of the body that are thought to give relief from pain or health problems in other parts of the body.

Treatment

Treatment times can vary from 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on treatment required. Treatment is designed to help prepare an athlete for an event and to help him or her to recover. Provide treatment only when there is reasonable expectation that it will be advantageous to the client.

Due to health and safety regulations, the therapist reserves the right to refuse treatment due to improper hygiene, also reserves the right to refuse treatment if intoxication is suspected.

Benefits

Benefits of MassagePhysically, massage may relax and refresh the muscles, assist in keeping muscles flexible and pliable, increase the circulation of blood and may relieve muscle soreness and stiff joints. Massage can Reduce Stress and Anxiety Up to 90% of illnesses may be stress related.
Although it largely affects those muscles just under the skin, its benefits may also reach the deeper layers of muscle and possibly even the organs themselves. Although a single massage will be enjoyable, the effects of massage are cumulative and a course of massage treatments will bring the most benefits. Massage is defined as the systematic or manual manipulations of the soft tissues of the body for therapeutic purposes such as promoting circulation of the blood and lymph, relaxation of muscles, relief from pain, restoration of metabolic balance and other benefits both physical and mental. Massage techniques remove constriction in the tissues, thus increasing the circulation of blood and lymph.

Techniques

There are many massage therapy techniques, including;. The massage system may include, but is not limited to, such techniques as, stroking, kneading, gliding, percussion, friction, vibration, compression, passive or active stretching within the normal anatomical range of movement; effleurage (either firm or light soothing, stroking movement, without dragging the skin, using either padded parts of fingertips or palms); petrissage (lifting or picking up muscles and rolling the folds of skin); or tapotement (striking with the side of the hand, usually with partly flexed fingers, rhythmic movements with fingers or short rapid movements of sides of the hand). Professional draping techniques are used with each part of the body being uncovered, massaged and returned to its original position. By applying pressure to the underlying soft tissues/muscles in a series of movements and techniques that include stroking, rubbing, kneading and pressing, the experience of massage can be either soothing or stimulating. Massage Therapy uses many different techniques and oils or creames on the muscles and soft tissue structures of the body to prevent and alleviate pain, discomfort, muscle spasm and stress as well as promote health and well being.

Many Medical Doctors have recognized its value and often prescribe massage therapy in conjunction with ~or~ in place of conventional medical remedies.
