About Counselling and Psychotherapy
It is often said that admitting there is a problem is the biggest step. The advantage of seeing a counsellor or therapist is to understand the situation in a profound way and talk through alternative ideas of dealing with or understanding the issue. To have the space to explore the choices available with an impartial listener is a new and fresh experience for some. Often when we talk to friends or family, we are told "not to worry" or given advice and told how to fix it. Counselling or therapy is a space where you are really heard and it is during these times that we start to heal and open up possibilities in our lives.
If the only thing we can control are our emotions and the ongoing reaction, then learning ways to do this, is a way of gaining peace which can bring about positive change. Counsellors and psychotherapists value the creation of specific goals and encourage ways to formulate them depending on the needs of the individual.
Some issues are addressed by knowing how to speak to people you fear or those who bully you. Learning skills of assertive communication can provide positive outcome in key parts of your life. The relationship between the counsellor and you is based on personal trust.
