What role can Psychology play in Pain Management?

Pain is something we all experience occasionally, but for some people it is there all the time.

Persistent pain is relatively common, affecting 1 in 5 Australians (Blyth, March et al. 2001) and often has multiple impacts on important areas in a person’s life, such as sleep quality, ability to work, social and family relationships, functional capacity and sense of self.

These impacts can contribute to feelings of grief, frustration, depression and anxiety, which in turn can increase pain perception and pain sensitivity.

When pain and psychological trauma result from the same incident, eg: motor vehicle accident or assault, the co-existence of pain and trauma responses can be mutually maintaining and need to be addressed concurrently.

The role of the psychologist in pain management is to work with clients in managing the effects that depression, anxiety, stress and trauma can have on pain and one’s ability to cope, as well as to assist clients to reconnect with valued directions that give their life meaning and purpose, which is neither defined by or limited by physical or emotional pain.
