SERVICES ROLFING® STRUCTURAL INTEGRATION –
More properly termed Structural Integration (SI), Rolfing is a scientifically validated, wholistic approach that works on the connective tissue to release, realign and balance the whole body.
Not so much a therapy as an education process, it is a highly effective method of hands-on manipulation and movement education that teaches you a better relationship to gravity and 3 dimensional space. It is a wonderful adjunct to personal wellness programs such as yoga, Pilates, dance and many forms of exercise, giving you greater resilience not just for fitness activities but for all aspects of life - work, leisure, computers, manual labour, gardening, driving and so on.
Through a series of ten sessions, work is done sequentially through the body to get better alignment and more efficient movement. This often resolves old aches and pains and stiffness and discomfort from many different causes, including back pain, repetitive motion injury, trauma and aging.
ROLF MOVEMENT INTEGRATION –
I also offer one on one and group classes in Rolf Movement. These have greater emphasis on the movement perception and co ordination component of Rolfing. They are a gentler, less hands on version of Rolfing Structural sessions.
Though often following the protocols of the ten session Rolfing recipe, they can also be free form and tailored toward specific sticking points in your body usage, movement pattern and proprioception. Often called Rolf Yoga, it does have a slight hands on component that has been described as “like Feldenkrais with oomph” and can be compared to the personalized adjustments that can occur in one on one yoga therapy.
COMBINED STRUCTURAL/ MOVEMENT INTEGRATION SESSIONS –
These 2 hour sessions combine the hands on structural work with the movement work and can be undertaken at any time throughout the 10 series as required.
ADVANCED ROLFING® 5 SERIES –
This is offered to clients who have done the Rolfing ten series work in the past and wish to bring their body to the next higher level of integration. It takes the changes achieved in the 10 series as a starting point and works the sticking points that remain in the tissue and in perception, that haven’t resolved or have become more apparent since completing the initial 10 sessions.
4 HANDS ROLFING –
Described by one client as "turbo-Rolfing" -two practitioners working on you at the same time– this exponentially increases the effect of the work.In conjunction with fellow Rolfer Tom Shand (who also has completed his advanced training), we both work specific lines of pull in the fascia and connective tissue. It is only recommended for people who have completed at least the first five parts of the Rolfing structural integration process.
REMEDIAL MASSAGE -
For specific problems and aches, I also offer single sessions or a short series of sessions of remedial massage. Though not the same as the Rolfing 10 series work, I utilize the same sensibilities, techniques and attention to detail. Clients can also come for regular maintenance sessions - discounts are offered to regular clients.
ABOUT
I work from my Lilyfield clinic 4 days a week and also teach individual and group classes in Rolf Movement. Several times per year I offer workshops for massage therapists in subjects such as postural education, direct myo-fascial techniques and the treatment of soft tissue in scoliosis by manual methods.
Professional association memberships include the RISI (Rolf Institute of Structural Integration), IASI (International Association of Structural Integrators), the GSI (Guild of Structural Integration) and AMT (Association of Massage Therapists). As a Senior Level 2 AMT member, rebates are available from every health fund plan that covers either Rolfing or remedial massage.
As well as the Rolf Method of Structural Integration, I also utilize techniques such as structural correction drawn from Onsen Technique, indirect techniques influenced by Orthobionomy and cranio-sacral therapy, neural mobilization techniques for nerve pain drawn from David Butler of the Neuro- Orthopaedic Institute and Michael Shacklock's Neurodynamics, a graded approach to core and girdle stability influenced by classes done with Trish Wisby-Roth, and Visceral Manipulation techniques learnt from the Barral Institute. About 40% of my clientele come for the treatment of scoliosis and this is the emphasis of my ongoing research. The other 60% come for a vast array of different reasons, be it postural improvement, refinement of movement or specific aches and pains.
