    What is TCM?

Traditional Chinese Medicine is one of the worlds oldest forms of diagnosis and treatment of disease. It encompasses the theory of Yin & Yang (Polar opposites) which scholars, for thousands of years believed must be in balance for the body to remain free of disease. “When one is excessive or deficient disease will prevail.”

It embraces the season’s, climate, lifestyle, hereditary and many other sources as the cause of disease. Its treatment is uniquely specific to the individual as no two people necessarily have “tonsillitis” due to the same pathophysiology. There are over 1000 Chinese herbs, 300 of which are most commonly used. A formula is prescribed to treat YOU specifically. For example, you may have tonsillitis without a fever and no thirst, your formula will be made to treat these 2 accompanying symptoms, on the other hand you may have a high fever, thirst & constipation, this formula will have many different ingredients to the 1st.

In the application of acupuncture treatment, thin needles are inserted into the skin at certain depths at specific points according to the disease. Its primary use is to facilitate the flow of qi and blood in the meridians (like electricity passing through a cable) which when becomes stagnant (like a kink in the cable). During your acupuncture treatment, 3-10 needles may be used. Most patients complain of no pain, rather a tingling feeling at the point which the needles are inserted.

You are able to see a TCM Practitioner for the same ailments you would your GP, however at times your GP may be your primary physician in an emergency, acute or serious medical conditions.

TCM is effective for the treatment of many ailments including:
    • Hay fever/Sinusitis
    • Common Cold/Virus
    • Digestive Disorders
    • Musculoskeletal Problems
    • Skin Diseases
    • Cardiovascular Disease
    • Diabetes
    • Painful Periods. Menstrual Disorders
    • Menopause
    • Infertility
    • Pregnancy & Birth

What to expect at the Consultation

Your first consultation may take up to 50 minutes. It involves a series of questions related to your complaint and incorporates areas such as diet, lifestyle sex & age. There are no invasive procedures in TCM such as blood tests or pap smears, but your tongue & pulse will be examined and blood pressure taken if necessary. Any of your western medical reports will be evaluated to provide optimal TCM treatment. You will then be advised on your diet & lifestyle, prescribed a herbal formula & or acupuncture treatment. You may also be referred to your General Practitioner for further investigation if necessary.

    What to expect from Acupuncture:

Acupuncture is both effective and relaxing. Some patients experience immediate relief, others need several treatments before experiencing improvements. You can expect to feel some positive change within several sessions.
Your first visit will last approximately one hour. To receive maximum benefit from your first session avoid vigorous exercise, eat  a light snack, and do not drink any alcohol or coffee. Immediately following the treatment avoid vigorous exercise for a few hours.

Your first and subsequent visits will include a physical examination based on the principles of Chinese Medicine. In addition to asking about your current and previous conditions we will take a detailed history , we will examine your tongue, feel your pulse and palpate areas of pain.

A complete Chinese diagnosis always includes:
    • Examining the color, shape, and coating of your tongue.
    • Evaluating speed, quality, and strength of several pulses at your wrist.
    • Analysis of orthopedic conditions.
    • The frequency of acupuncture treatments depends on the severity of your diagnosed condition.

Chronic degenerative conditions may require regular treatment over several years. Treatments are usually spaced once or twice per week since the physiological effect of a single treatment generally last up to three days. Because of its positive impact on the endocrine, immune, and digestive systems, acupuncture can be used on an as needed basis to mitigate the effects of stress on these organ systems.

Acupuncture when practiced by a licensed practitioner is an extremely safe modality. There are no serious side effects to this treatment. Needles used are pre-packaged, pre-sterilized one-use disposable needles. the effect of acupuncture does not diminish over time. It may be used safely and effectively over many years.
