What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy is a well recognised form of complementary medicine and is becoming increasingly more popular and widely accepted amongst Australians and within the general community. Naturopathy uses the healing power of nature to restore and maintain health and prevent disease. Our alternative treatment and management of medical conditions, provides an innovative and holistic approach to your health and wellbeing.

A naturopath recognises the body’s inherent ability to heal itself and believes that addressing and treating the underlying cause is paramount. They also understand that the underlying causes of disease can sometimes be intricate and multifaceted, and can range from a number of imbalances in areas such as:
  • emotional/psychological;
  • lifestyle;
  • environmental;
  • spiritual;
  • genetic predispositions; and
  • nutritional deficiencies.

Naturopathy is not used solely for the treatment of disease, but also focuses on prevention and provides you with lifelong management plans to ensure a state of optimal health.

How it can help you!

A naturopath works in a gentle, non-invasive manner, aiming to restore vitality through supporting and stimulating the body’s own healing mechanisms. A variety of treatment options may be used to help you achieve your health goals. These may include:

Herbal medicine: A complementary therapy that uses plant or plant extracts to help treat illness.

Clinical nutrition: Study of the relationship between food and the well-being of the body. It is the science of nutrients and how they are digested, absorbed, transported, metabolised, stored, and utilised by the body. Nutrition is extremely important in preventing disease and achieving optimal health.

Dietary & Lifestyle advice: Lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity, smoking, and alcohol intake have a major impact on our health and wellbeing.

Homeopathy: A gentle, holistic system of healing, suitable for everyone, young and old. Homeopathy focuses on you as an individual, concentrating on treating your specific physical and emotional symptoms, to give long lasting benefits.

Flower essences: Natural remedies, produced from various types of flowers and plants that address negative emotional states, physical ailments, and help to bring about a more positive mind-set and enhance one’s wellbeing.

Iridology: A non-invasive practice in which characteristics of the iris are examined for information about a person’s health. It can reveal inherent strengths and weaknesses, and highlight systems and organs in the body that are overactive, inflamed or distressed.

Shelley Collings
B.App.Sci (Intell Disab), Ad.Dip.Health.Sci (Naturopathy)

With a passion for healthcare and rehabilitation, Shelley Collings began her studies and graduated with a bachelor of applied science in intellectual disability from RMIT. After completing this course Shelley began working with children with intellectual disabilities as well as their families. Whilst working in this field, she found that it was common for the children to be frequently medicated, and this awareness encouraged her to pursue studies in alternative medicine.

Shelley then went on to graduate with an advanced diploma of naturopathy from the Australian College of Natural Medicine (ACNM). With her knowledge of, and passion for natural healing, she endeavors to provide you with an exceptional level of quality and holistic natural medicine. However, she also recognises and understands that people can also benefit from a combination of traditional and complementary medicine.

Shelley was a naturopath in a local health food store for many years and has also worked with a number of extremely talented practitioners. Her aim is to provide each patient with an individualised treatment and management program by conducting comprehensive naturopathic health, diet and lifestyle assessments. This, combined with herbal medicine, vitamin and mineral supplements, homeopathic remedies and flower essences will help you to achieve your optimal health.

She is a member of the Australian Natural Therapists Association (ANTA) and regularly attends both complementary and traditional medical seminars and conferences. This keeps her constantly updated with regards to new findings and studies within the field.

With a renewed sense of health, wellbeing and vitality you are well on your way towards a happier and healthier life.
