ABOUT ESTELLE ABBAS

I am a medical scientist and clinical researcher, and have studied and practised various forms of complementary medicine for over twenty years. I have dedicated myself to developing treatments which combine complementary medicine with Western scientific knowledge. I am a registered doctor of Chinese Medicine (RMIT), have a diploma in Shiatsu therapy and I am a Fellow of the Australian Natural Therapists Association.

ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is extremely effective at relieving acute and chronic pain. According to traditional acupuncture theory, pain is caused by blocked energy channels. Insertion of very fine, sterile, disposable needles is relatively painless and releases blockages almost immediately. Western medical research indicates that acupuncture stimulates the release of natural cortisol and endorphins, which combat pain and promote healing.

Accompanying treatments are: moxibustion for warming points; and cupping to increase blood flow.

Needle-free acupuncture is also available. Mini electro-gel pads are placed on certain acupuncture points and a very mild electric stimulation is applied. It is a gentle, pleasant and effective treatment.
Acupuncture is useful for pain syndromes, especially for back, neck and shoulder pain. It is helpful in stress related disorders such as insomnia, headaches, and menstrual pain. Recently it has been proven to be very useful in improving fertility.

ABOUT BACHFLOWERS

The 38 Bachflower remedies are homeopathic flower essences, which treat underlying emotional problems that not only create the illness, but also complicate the healing process. A combination of these essences, taken as drop form, will treat the character of a person, as well as their current mood.

Some useful combinations help with loneliness, depression, low confidence, decision-making, anxiety, grief and shock.

ABOUT REIKI

Reiki is a universal healing energy that is transmitted through the hands of a ‘tuned’ person, called a Reiki channel. The energy is used by the recipient’s body to repair itself. The laying of hands on the body initiates the flow of Reiki. It is experienced as warmth, tingling, peace and a profound feeling of well-being. Reiki is a wonderful addition to any treatment as it brings both peace of mind and healing.

FAQS

Will acupuncture hurt?
There is only minimal discomfort on insertion of the needle. It feels something like a ‘mosquito bite’. I use very fine needles (0.22 mm.).

Is acupuncture safe?
Yes. I use sterile single use needles and swab the skin with anti-septics. I use a shallow insertion technique, rarely insert needles more than 4 mm. Acupuncture is free of side effects and it will not react with any medication you are taking.

What should I expect for my first acupuncture treatment?
I will take a detailed Chinese medicine history, asking questions about your symptoms and about your digestion, sleeping, moods, and menstrual cycle. This includes looking at your tongue and feeling your pulse. I will diagnose the pattern of disharmony in terms of Chinese medicine analysis. This will enable me to choose acupuncture points.
You will be asked to lie on the couch while I insert the needles. Sometimes I use moxibustion (warming treatment) and cupping.

How long does a session last?
Generally a session takes between 60 to 90 minutes.

Can I claim private health fund rebates and Workcare rebates?
Workcover is available, but you need to be referred by a doctor.
I am accredited with most health funds for rebates for acupuncture treatments.
