WHAT IS CHINESE MEDICINE?

Traditional Chinese Medicine is a system of primary health care that dates back over three thousand years.

It takes a holistic approach to understanding illness and encompasses acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, exercise therapy, dietary therapy and lifestyle advice. Its focus is as much on prevention of disease as it is on the treatment of health conditions.

This system of health care, in which treatments are tailored in accordance with each individual’s health condition, developed from the philosophy that restoring balance and normal functioning will both treat ailments and prevent other illnesses from developing.

In Australia, Chinese Medicine practitioners are educated in Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, diagnosis and assessment, as well as in Western bio-medical sciences.

Practitioners make a diagnosis after taking into account presenting signs and symptoms, medical history, general constitution and assessment of the pulse and tongue.

ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is a therapeutic treatment involving the insertion of fine, disposable, sterile needles into specific points (acu-points) on the body.

The therapy works to regulate the flow of Qi, or energy, and blood throughout the body’s meridian or channel system. Chinese medicine theory is based on the necessity for Qi and blood to flow smoothly throughout the network of meridians or pathways covering the body in order to maintain good health.

Many factors can contribute to the interruption of the smooth flow of Qi and blood. These include stress, overwork, poor diet, disease pathogens, environmental conditions and lifestyle factors.

Following a diagnosis, each acupuncture session is tailored towards the individual’s presentation and specific points are chosen to treat the underlying cause of disease as well as addressing the symptoms.

As a natural form of healing, acupuncture:

• Provides drug-free pain relief
• Effectively treats a wide range of acute and chronic ailments
• Provides a holistic approach to the treatment of disease and illness – linking body, mind and emotions
• Assists in the prevention against disease and illness as well as maintaining general wellbeing

CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE

The origins of Chinese herbal medicine can be traced back at least five thousand years, making it one of the oldest and most long-standing health care systems in the world.

Most of the Chinese herbs used today consist of plant and mineral origin. Traditional remedies that were derived from endangered species have been replaced by other substances with similar actions.

A herbal formula is created to specifically match each individual’s health problem. As a condition changes and improves with treatment, the Chinese herbal formula is also adjusted and modified until the desired health outcome is achieved.

Chinese herbs can be administered in pill or granulated powder form.

CUPPING THERAPY

Cupping therapy involves the suction of glass cups to various parts of the body for therapeutic purposes. The cups can be applied directly over acu-points, along the meridians or in an area where there is pain (such as back or shoulder). Cupping helps to improve circulation, clear toxins and reduce pain.

CHANNEL SCRUBBING/SCRAPING

Channel scrubbing is a traditional treatment used mostly to treat pain and stiffness, more commonly in the neck and back. It involves rubbing along the meridians/channels located around the area of pain (using a special implement) to remove any blockages of Qi or blood and build up of toxins.

The result is improved circulation and the reduction or removal of pain and stiffness. It can also be beneficial for those with menstrual disorders, sleeping problems and respiratory complaints.
