    PREGNANCY MASSAGE

    As your pregnancy progresses, your body inevitably undergoes many structural changes that frequently result in muscular pain and imbalance. During this time you will receive many well-meaning assurances that your discomfort is “all part of being pregnant”. The good news is that this is not always the case. My approach to pregnancy massage is to address these structural changes, easing the way for your body to comfortably adapt to your changing shape and centre of gravity. As well as addressing the source of the problem, I will take the time to explain to you the likely anatomical basis for your discomfort.

    Common pregnancy discomforts that massage may safely relieve or avoid include;

    • Back pain
    • Pelvic pain
    • Sciatica
    • Restricted breathing
    • Numbness & tingling in arms & hands
    • Leg cramping
    • Headaches

    Structural discomfort is not the only reason to have massage during your pregnancy. Pregnancy creates physiological strain for all body systems as well as significant emotional upheaval. Regular massage offers a wide range of benefits that support your wellbeing during your pregnancy:

    • A sense of standing taller and moving more freely
    • Improved sleep quality
    • Improved blood circulation, thus increasing oxygen and nutrients to the placenta
    • Reduced incidence of varicose veins
    • Improved lymphatic circulation, encouraging toxin removal and discouraging swelling
    • Relaxation and stress relief

    POST NATAL MASSAGE

    In the midst of sleep deprivation and the emotional upheaval associated with the birth of your child, your body seeks to readapt to its non pregnant state. Depending on your needs, massage can assist your recovery process by;

    • Alleviating muscular aches and fatigue from the delivery and from long hours spent breastfeeding
    • Restoring pelvic balance, thus alleviating associated and possible ongoing back pain
    • Stabilizing hormone levels, reducing the incidence of postnatal depression
    • Encourage relaxation which may assist with breast feeding
    • Reduce swelling of the legs and ankles
    • Restoring body orientation
    • Provide nurturing support and attention to you at this demanding time.

    POST NATAL RE-BALANCING

    Unfortunately, many of the structural changes associated with your pregnancy may not completely revert to their pre pregnancy state after your baby is born. Often, a post natal woman's pelvis retains the forward tilt of pregnancy, resulting in a loss of support for the spine and a downward pull on the rib cage. Hours spent breast feeding can further contribute to a round shouldered appearance as well as creating imbalance between the muscles of the front and back of the chest. To accommodate the increased girth of her pregnant abdomen, a woman needs to rotate her legs outward (aka the pregnancy waddle!) which compromises efficient walking. Unattended to, all these changes can predispose you to increased discomfort during subsequent pregnancies and may even result in lifelong patterns of strain and imbalance.

    Guided by my Rolfing training, I have developed a series of three cumulative sessions that specifically address these structural changes. Gentle, deep tissue massage and movement re-education assist you to fully surrender your pregnant posture and gait. The outcome is restored balance, comfort and alignment, along with the psychological boost associated with reclaiming your pre-pregnancy body.
