About the Feldenkrais Method®
The Feldenkrais Method®, developed through 40 years of study by Dr Moshe Feldenkrais, is a revolutionary approach to understanding human functioning. Following a knee injury,"Feldenkrais used his incredible scientific mind, extraordinary observational skills, and his expertise in Judo to determine what made his painful knee better or worse. His new treatment was based not just on the understanding of individual muscles and joints but on the role of awareness in movement and body mechanics."(Dr Norman Doidge .1999)
The Feldenkrais Method utilizes movement and attention to enhance our natural abilities to learn, to change and to continue to develop throughout our lifetime.
Throughout the world, the Feldenkrais Method® is growing in recognition and with wider application in the sciences and the arts. Certified Feldenkrais Method Practitioners® use movement, attention and sensory re-education to promote ease and comfort, improve co-ordination and flexibility, expand self-awareness and evoke greater vitality.
Feldenkrais® provides a new and creative way to refine human performances in sports and the arts. It is amazing in its versatility. It can facilitate rehabilitation from accidents and illnesses, prevent on the job injuries, and assist those with learning disabilities. Feldenkrais® draws on the physical sciences, martial arts, and all the human sciences. It encompasses the developmentally based patterns of human movement and behaviour.
Feldenkrais® lessons take two main forms - Awareness Through Movement® and Functional Integration®.
Awareness Through Movement® lessons are verbally directed movement lessons, usually done in a group. As each person explores the movements, they experience more of the range of possibilities of human movement and functioning. Movement patterns are explored in various positions including sitting, lying, standing, and walking.
A Functional Integration® session is an individual lesson, using a gentle, non-invasive hands-on interaction to guide the student towards a new or more varied use of their body.
Feldenkrais Professional Training Programmes are accredited by the Australian Training and Accreditation Board (AUSTAB) and are recognized by the Australian Feldenkrais Guild Inc. Upon successful completion of the four year program, graduates will be eligible for certification and membership of the Australian Feldenkrais Guild, or any other Feldenkrais Guild worldwide.
After successful completion of the first two years of the program you will be authorized to teach group Awareness Through Movement lessons, on a provisional basis. You will be authorized to teach individual Functional Integration lessons after successful graduation from the full course.
On-going continuing education is required to maintain certification as a Feldenkrais method Practitioner®
The International Feldenkrais Federation (IFF) brings together the organisations and people that are engaged with most of the professional functions in the Feldenkrais community worldwide.
The IFF is a federation of seventeen Feldenkrais guilds and associations in seventeen countries (including Australia), along with the Training Accreditation Boards (TAB's) on three continents and the Feldenkrais family.
Its member organisations represent about 4,000 teachers and practitioners (as of March 2005).
