Because your life is worth figuring out

Figured For Life

Are you addicted to your strategy?
This week I’ve been thinking about the strategies we run in life and since everything we do is a strategy that has proven to be quite a bit to think about!

Everything we do is a strategy – the way we brush our teeth to the way we interact with others. A series of steps to always produce a consistent result – which is why we often do things on autopilot!

The strategies that have caught my focus are the ones that no longer serve us, but we’re choosing to run anyway.

What do you call it when you are doing something that will not get you the results you say you want, will in fact move you further away from what you say you want and cause you serious frustration and angst? And yet you continue to do it anyway?

I call it lunacy.

If you knew that you were doing something that would hurt you, surely you would do anything you could to stop doing it. Right? Well yeah if the thing you are doing is obvious and causes immediate pain, like putting your hand on a hot pot handle. This causes an instant change of strategy for most of us, generally a reach for a pot-mitt!

Sometimes though the thing we are doing is obvious but the pain is delayed, like smoking, overeating or not exercising. There is a small amount of pain now but the comfort and familiarity of the strategy is more appealing than the unknown of change.

For example, someone who is seriously unhealthy often doesn’t have any reference points for how good it feels to be truly healthy. They do not know what it is like to have energy to burn, to enjoy real flavours and not just artificial preservatives and salt. A smoker often doesn’t remember the pleasure of being able to breathe easy.

The do remember the pain of “trying” to break their strategies. They remember the headaches and cravings from their last diet or quit attempt. They remember how painful it was to try and exercise, and push their bodies beyond what they felt was normal.

Even that though can be overcome if they push through it. There is a bigger problem with trying to change long-term strategies though and that is the inevitable “well what the hell do I do now?” The feeling of being at a loss as to what to do next when you cut out an old strategy.

More often than not, the harmful strategy is so intertwined with your way of life that it really does require a complete lifestyle shift, not another diet attempt.

It requires a change to the way you experience and do the basic activities in your day – changes to where you go for lunch, how you shop, what you do for relaxation.

It can also change the way you interact with others, if you were used to catching up over a meal or heading out for a ciggie and a chat, you may feel disconnected from people from the “old you” ways.

You can also find yourself with stacks more time on your hands that you never had before and wondering what to do with it.

The truth is that if you cut out a strategy and leave the void, then that void will be filled with the same strategy or something worse – which is why dieting tends to fail so dismally.

If you’re ready to cut out a strategy, then you must prepare for the lifestyle pro-sequences to come with that. My 5 tips on most effectively ridding yourself of unresourceful strategies are:
  1. Know why you’re doing this – if you’re doing it for “Should’s” or someone else’s reasons then it is 90% likely to fail. You need to be very clear on why you’re doing this for you.

  2. Be aware of the Intertwines – spend a week being very conscious about your daily habits and activities and know which ones are likely to spark a desire to do the old thing. Then brainstorm new activies or different ways to experiences the old activities eg. Catching up with friends for a walk instead of a meal.

  3. Prepare your home – Make sure you have filled your home with things to prompt you and keep you on your new strategy and cleanse your home of everything from your past before you begin. Invest in quality foods, new hobbies and hypnosis/meditation CDs in line with your new strategy.

  4. Prepare your calendar – If you are about to quit smoking, drinking or overeating then make sure the first week of your new strategy you avoid the places and people that are likely to attempt to coax you back to old ways!

  5. Get Blitzed! – If you’re serious then hypnosis and many NLP techniques to turn the things you once LOVED into something that makes you want to puke. These virtually eliminate the need for willpower because you are changing the way your brain is wired to think about those things.
    1. So spend some time getting consciously aware of your strategies and then follow the 5 steps to change and experience some new, phenomenal results in your life.
