Traditional Shiatsu Therapy

In Japan, oriental medicine is called the medicine of vital energy. The explanation of its effectiveness is based on an energetic model rather than the biochemical model of western medicine. Ancient oriental physicians recognized that vital energy (called Ki in Japanese or Qi in Chinese) circulates along channels or meridians throughout the body and links all of the body’s parts and functions. Ki maintains and nurtures our physical body as well as our mind. It keeps the blood circulating, warms the body and fights disease. When a person is healthy, Ki flows smoothly through the channels but if, for some reason, the flow is blocked, weak, or excessive, then symptoms and/or illness occurs. In treatment, the aim of the therapist is to correct the flow of Ki by applying pressure to specific points along the channels. In so doing, a change in part or function of the body is achieved. Changes in Ki precede physical change, so shiatsu can act as preventative medicine, correcting energy flow before a serious illness occurs. If physical change has already occurred, it can be reversed by adjusting the flow of Ki.

The word Shiatsu means finger pressure. Shiatsu therapy is a traditional Japanese manual therapy offering a path to better health and wellbeing. It is based on the theory of acupuncture and incorporates principles of anatomy, physiology and pathology. Shiatsu therapy involves applying pressure with fingers, palms and elbows along the pressure points, stimulating the body's innate ability to heal itself. It is exceptionally effective in reducing stress and alleviating an array of symptoms, including:

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Neck, shoulder and back pain
  • Insomnia
  • Menstrual problems
  • Asthmatic symptoms
  • Digestive problems
  • Injuries and muscular pain

Shiatsu has evolved out of 4000 years of oriental medical wisdom. Balance of these energy flows is considered to be essential for health and wellbeing. Those who receive shiatsu treatment on a regular bases will not only experience a sense of wellness on a physical level, but also benefit from a deep sense of calmness and mental clarity. Shiatsu being a holistic therapy aims to address ones physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing.

    Testimonials

“When I arrived at Yuki's studio I had been in a complicated spiral of critical back/leg nerve and muscular issues for over two years. At times I could not walk at all and the pain was extremely intense, constant and could attack different parts of body seemingly randomly. Each visit to Yuki had a powerful effect. When I had the opportunity I visited every week and the result now are subtle yet observable transformations in my body. I am pain free, gleeful. Through my experience I believe that shiatsu in their ability to address the core energetics of a person, can have a profound healing effect. Yuki has a unique ability to transfer this to her clients, in a highly accurate and precise way. As a practicing shiatsu professional she has exemplary skills not often found. The Studio is also a wonderful and serene environment, and the furniture is great too! I still maintain regular visits to Yuki, as I believe that shiatsu is a cornerstone of my healthcare and wellbeing. Plus, it feels great ;-).”

"I have found that Shiatsu really helps with the neck/shoulder tension I get from sitting behind a desk all day. Overall I am pretty healthy but I visit Yuki every month or so to help with neck/shoulder tension and also as a preventative measure. Yuki is little but she is strong and really knows what she is doing! I feel very relaxed after a session and always sleep well. Thanks Yuki!"
