Free Spirit Pilates & Massage wants you to be the best you can be! Whether through intimate studio sessions or group mat classes or remedial massage therapy - your health is our priority!Joanne’s passion for pilates began in early 2000 through her love of dance. Since completing her first instructorship course she has immersed herself in continuing education and travelled to New York City (the home of pilates) to discover the roots of the method. After updating her training through the Polestar Pilates group (recognised worldwide) to a Diploma of Professional Pilates Instruction she was asked to join their mentoring programme. Joanne has also completed a Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice and uses these skills during studio sessions to help clients get the most out of their sessions.
The mind body connection has really become clear to Jo after many years of teaching and she has witnessed many of her clients transform mentally and physically after finally feeling in control of their bodies. Joanne is passionate about helping her clients realise their goals and regards pilates as an ongoing part of life. The freedom of movement that can be achieved through pilates has positive outcomes that surpass the physical- it allows the mind to focus on life and the spirit to be unleashed.

Private Studio Pilates:
Do you have neck or back pain? Are you recovering from or dealing with an injury? Is pilates your first step back to exercise after a long break? Have you recently given birth and feel you need time spent on you? Are you training with a specific goal in sight? Are you embarking on a weight loss programme and needing additional toning?
Working on specialised pilates equipment produces results at an accelerated pace. Studio sessions allow for sport and dance specific cross training and are very well suited to anyone with any pre-existing conditions such as back, neck or general joint pain. The body is supported and the impact of gravity is reduced. Working on specialised pilates equipment also assists in increasing muscle tone definition and in improving bone health as spring resistance is used.
Private Studio sessions allow the focus to be soley on you! You only do the exercises to specifically benefit your body and if something doesn't feel right we adjust it accoridingly. Attention to detail is a priority and exercise choice is continuously monitored to ensure that your form continues to improve.
How It Works:
Studio sessions begin with an initial consultation which includes postural assessment, movement analysis and a review of current and previous injuries and/or conditions. If you have any relevant information from a health professional you are encouraged to bring this along. It is then time to get you moving and see how your body responds to pilates!
Mat Classes:
Mat Classes are a great way to add a second pilates session to your weekly exercise schedule. They are suited to those who are pain free with no serious neck or back issues. The pilates mat exercises are a challenging way to re-balance the body, improve posture and flexibility. You will soon notice an improvement to your abdominal strength and stamina!
How It Works:
Bookings are essential for the mat classes as numbers are capped to a maximum of 12 participants. While an initial consultation is not required, we ask that you complete a pre-exercise questionnaire so that your goals can be catered to in the group setting.
How Often Should I Do Pilates?
In an ideal world, doing pilates twice a week gives great results in a short period of time. You will notice an increased ease in your movement, flexibility and strength and your recovery from other sports and activities will be more rapid. This can be a combination of private studio sessions and mat classes or the same session within the week.
The key to long lasting results and good comprehension of the technique is CONSISTENCY! If getting to class once a week or even once a fortnight is all that your budget or timetable allows for- that's ok. Make a commitment to a session and stick to it and you will feel the benefits of pilates in your body.
Remedial Massage Therapy
Why not follow up your pilates session with a massage? Specialising in relaxation and remedial styles, Jo's knowledge of the functionality of the body as well as straight anatomy will complement and in some cases accelerate the good work you are already achieving in your sessions.
