NATUROPATHY
Naturopathic practitioners follow six key principles in their practices:
1. The Healing Power of Nature.
Naturopathic medicine recognises an inherent self-healing process in each of us which is both ordered and intelligent. Naturopaths act to identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery, and to facilitate and augment this self-healing ability.
2. Identify and Treat the Cause.
Naturopathy seeks to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness, rather than to merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.
3. Do No Harm.
Naturopaths follow these precepts to treat their clients:
a. Utilise methods and therapeutic substances which minimise the risk of harmful side effects;
b. Avoid when possible the harmful suppression of symptoms;
c. Acknowledge, respect and work with the individual’s self healing process.
4. Practitioner as Teacher.
Naturopaths educate their patients and encourage self-responsibility for health. They also recognise and employ the therapeutic potential of a good practitioner/patient relationship.
5. Treat the Whole Person.
Naturopaths treat each patient taking into account individual physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, genetic, environmental, social and other factors.
6. Prevention.
Naturopaths emphasise the prevention of disease—assessing risk factors, heredity and susceptibility to disease and making appropriate interventions in partnership with their patients to prevent illness.
Most Naturopaths use a wide variety of therapies and techniques (such as nutrition, herbal medicine, homoeopathy, and manual therapies).
What should I expect from a visit to a Naturopath
At the Functional Health Centre your first visit may take more than an hour. During this time, a very thorough history is taken, including questions about diet, lifestyle, family history, stress, and environmental exposures. An appropriate physical examination may be performed, which can include conventional tests, e.g.
• Live blood screening
• Blood typing
• Zinc taste testing
• Urinary Indican testing
• Individualised Metabolic typing
PERSONALISED WEIGHT LOSS & WELLNESS PROGRAMS
• Find and maintain the correct weight for you.
• Get the facts about your dietary health, with no more guesswork about what foods are best for you.
• Feel full and satisfied after eating, control your cravings, and banish hunger between meals.

At Functional Health we use cutting edge science and technology, based on over 25 years of research, to create an eating plan that is attuned to your own individual metabolism - foods that will lead to optimal energy production and health.
How much do you spend on supplements?
Except for identical twins, each human being has unique biochemistry resulting in quite diverse nutritional needs. For example, some of us are genetically suited for a vegetable-based diet and others are not. Some persons can satisfy their nutritional needs by diet alone and others must have nutritional supplements to overcome genetic aberrations.
Why spend money on food and supplements that may actually be depleting you of optimal health? We can tailor a diet plan specifically for you.
LIVE BLOOD SCREENING
Live blood screening is an important tool that gives your Practitioner vital information about your blood, health, and the quality of your nutrition. Once identified, these problems can be addressed and corrected.
What is involved?
The process involves taking a single living drop of blood from the finger-tip which is then placed under a powerful microscope, this only takes a few minutes and requires no finding of veins or drawing of blood. The image is then displayed on a screen for both the practitioner and client to view.
The screening is different from the usual laboratory testing that quantifies the levels of certain components in a sample of blood. Live blood screening gives an indication as to the quality of an individual’s blood – an important foundation of preventative health care showing the effects that diet, lifestyle and stress can have on our well-being.
What can Live Blood Screening show?
• Nutritional status of blood
• Chronic infections (e.g. candida)
• Allergic reactions
• Blood cell integrity
• Inflammation levels
• Immune system activity
• Hydration levels
• Increased toxins (e.g. as a result of smoking)
What are the benefits to you?
Live blood testing allows your practitioner to:
• View your blood seconds after it has left your body
• Quickly identify nutrient deficiencies
• Check the ratio of white blood cells to determine health of immune system
• Identify whether body is being affected by toxic load, allergens and inflammation
• Identify oxidative changes (which accelerate ageing), and liver stress
• Assess the absorption and utilisation of fats
• Assess digestive function & ‘leaky gut’
• Assess the integrity of blood cells and the capability of the blood to effectively distribute nutrients
What do you get?
• Fast, accurate results
• A better understanding of your body and what affects it
• A first-hand view of your blood
• Immediate results so that you can discuss treatment option with your practitioner the same day
• Receive a customised professional report individually prepared
• Greater appreciation and interest in finding solutions
• Comparison of your blood before and after treatment
We suggest that your blood be screened:
• As part of your initial health assessment
• Regularly, during your wellness program to ensure that identified problems are being addressed
• Whenever you feel that your health is being adversely affected by stress, diet, smoking, alcohol or other influences.
STRESS, TOXICITY & BLOOD SUGAR REGULATION
The great majority of health problems we encounter in modern Western Society may be laid at the door of just three causes:
1. Stress, and our inability to cope with it;
2. Toxicity, and the body’s incapacity to deal with it;
3. Problems with energy production related to poor blood sugar control due to insulin resistance brought about by stress, toxicity and inappropriate diet.
After years of research in, and teaching of natural medicine, Andrew & Kathleen are specialists in the management of these processes. Using the latest research and developments in natural medicine, they have created safe, effective programs to identify and rectify these problems.
BODY COMPOSITION ANALYSIS
Body Composition Analysis is an integral part of a health and nutrition assessment. Research has shown that body composition is directly related to health. A normal balance of body fat is associated with good health and longevity. Excess fat in relation to lean body mass, known as altered body composition, can greatly increase your risk of developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and more.
At the Functional Health Centre you can choose from two forms of body composition analysis:
The Segmental Body Composition Monitor (SBCM) uses innovative retractable handgrip electrodes, along with standard feet electrodes, giving individual body composition readings for each body segment- trunk, right arm, left arm, right leg and left leg. This is especially useful for anyone who is monitoring the balance of left and right side of body or trying to build or rehabilitate a particular part of one's body.
Why segmental? Simply put, segmental gives you more information than standard body composition monitors. The eight bioelectrical impedance analysis electrodes allow us to analyse well beyond standard body composition; giving you a segmental review of what you are made of. In seconds, the monitor can display a complete body composition profile.
The Bioelectrical Impedance Analyser (BIA) “calculates” and estimates your tissue and fluid compartments – using an imperceptible electrical current passed through pads placed on your hand and foot as you lie comfortably clothed on a examination table. In just minutes, we will have detailed measurements to help create an effective personalised program for you.
With body composition analysis you have a greater indication of your:
• Muscle Mass
• Fat Mass
• Bone Mass
• Level of hydration
• Basal metabolic rate
• Metabolic age
• Physique rating on a scale of 1-9
• Visceral fat rating
Follow up test will help to monitor your health and measure your progress.
INDIVIDUALISED METABOLIC TYPING
We have all heard the saying “One mans meat is another mans poison”, but this discipline for identifying one’s highly individualised dietary and supplement needs, is proving the statement to be true.
What should I expect from Individualised Metabolic Typing?
On completion of an extensive questionnaire and some in clinic tests, the practitioner is able to establish your 'Individualised Metabolic Type' program.
As each client moves through their program they are taught how to personalise their dietary requirements. This involves learning to alter protein, fat and carbohydrate ratios, so as to optimise energy and other parameters. Also and most importantly, they learn to look beyond macronutrient ratios, and to make food choices that best suit their type and individual constitution. For example, a client of one metabolic type may do well on a wide range of vegetable proteins, grains and sweet fruits whilst another client of a different metabolic type chooses animal proteins, to avoid grains, and to consume a large range of vegetables and less sweet fruits.
Further, any allergies, sensitivities and a number of other dietary adjustments may need to be included within the picture. This whole process gives the client a comprehensive understanding of their individual dietary needs.
Nutritional supplements are prescribed (as needed) according to the client’s individual type. Different types again have different needs, and knowledge of your type determines which supplements you require and those to avoid. This is a very targeted approach, which by its nature prevents over-prescribing.
