Stress
What does “stress” mean? The body responds to what happens around you, with hormones that prepare you to deal with whatever threat is causing the response. This worked very well when the threat was physical, eg a wild animal, or the need to hunt for food. Our way of life has changed much faster than our body’s way of responding, so that these days the response may not be particularly suited to the situation.
This can lead to anxiety states, poor concentration, poor sleep patterns, poor eating habits, high blood pressure, problems with relating to other people, and so on. Modern medicine has treatments which may provide some relief, but sometimes lead to other problems.
The old traditional medical systems, perhaps surprisingly, can often provide a way to work with the body to provide what it needs to bring it back into balance, with physical medicines (herbs, and healthy food), and energetic medicines (acupuncture, and other systems).
Modern nutritional medicine will also contribute by recognising what’s missing from the body’s building blocks so the deficit can be remedied.
There is always a way forward!
Lifetime interest in good health from nature
Most of us would struggle to find foods that are anything like the quality that our great grandparents ate, because of:
- modern farming practices: badly depleted soils (a poor start) and monocultures that lack the biodiversity that should help us obtain all the elements, major and minor, for vibrant health
- foods that depend on chemical fertilisers and toxic pest controls (inadequate nutrients and added poisons)
- factory processing to make foods last longer, which unfortunately removes the life force and many already inadequate nutrients.
So our food quality isn’t enough to grow really robust bodies overflowing with energy and happiness.
Then add in the stresses of modern daily life – our systems haven’t quite adjusted to the change from needing physical Fight or Flight responses, so we often run on elevated adrenalin to no purpose, and exhaust ourselves.
Add some environmental stresses, and other chemical assaults, and we absorb “stuff” our bodies don’t know how to deal with, and disrupt our systems so they don’t work effectively.
Dis-ease is the result, sometimes just less-than-glowing health, but other times really serious conditions, that need serious help! We all need to explore ways to support good health – there’s a wonderful range of therapies and practitioners who can help in one way or another.
We are what we eat (and breathe, and think) and the way we live our lives.
Since most of us can’t devote ourselves to growing the very best quality food, and living a stress-free life, perhaps you need some help:

I have a variety of methods available to inform us:
- body analysis (weight, proportion of fat to lean body tissue, hydration)
- iridology (your eyes can tell a lot about your constitution and areas of vulnerability, so we can build you up)
- blood type diet principles (what foods have special value for you, and some that aren’t helpful to you at all)
- and I’ll apply some traditional Chinese energy medicine principles to your health (diet, lifestyle, exercise,) and if you wish, acupuncture to balance, tonify, and move energy.
Together we can work on foods, activities, and ideas to improve your health. If there are deficiencies that we can’t overcome otherwise, I can offer you nutritional supplements and herbal medicines to start the clean-up-and-recover process.
Herbs the first medicine
From the beginning, every society has included healers who knew what plants and substances in their environment to use as food and as medicine, for the health of their people – thousands of years of accumulated knowledge, often handed down verbally from mother to daughter, father to son.
Happily, these days, this traditional knowledge is able to be tested by modern scientific methods that confirm (or deny) its usefulness and how to best use the herb, including adjustments to traditional knowledge to ensure the best and safest selection, preparation, storage, and dosage.
The herbs that I offer you, are derived from the traditions of the East and West (Europe, Britain, North America, Russia, China, Japan, India, are the main traditions, but there are also exciting “new” herbs from Africa, South America and the rest of Asia). They are processed, thoroughly tested, and distributed by the most respected Australian companies.
Some herbs are endangered species in the wild; for these, only cultivated crops will be used by reputable herbalists. Other herbs have weed status in some places! These are “wild crafted”, ie gathered from the wild in places unaffected by pollution, then tested for the true species and its constituents, processed and marketed.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture has been in use for several thousand years, so there is a huge amount of traditional knowledge. Modern science has also been employed to explore how acupuncture works, and has verified the existence of the meridian system, right from the earliest divisions of cells in the brand new foetus. Acupuncture uses needles so fine you may not even feel them being used; or you may distinctly feel the Qi being moved along the meridians or channels. Often used to restore balance between various organ systems and between the various forms of Qi in the body, and to encourage the smooth flow of Qi around the body, to nourish and strengthen the organs, and maintain body processes such as absorption, transformation, and elimination.
