Services
  • Counselling and Psychotherapy
  • Coaching and Consulting
  • Supervision and Training

I work as a psychotherapist, counsellor and coach, which are different pathways to healing, growth and development. I use both process-oriented and solution-oriented approaches, always mindful of the uniqueness of each individual. My work focuses on key areas:

1. Women’s Empowerment: Health, Work, Relationships, Finances and Spirituality
Empowerment often requires becoming empowered around specific issues such as health or weight, relationships and family, work and life direction, financial or spiritual life. It also includes healing past wounds and awakening to new capacities and potentials in ourselves.

2. Relationship Work: Conflict Resolution for Inner and Outer Conflict
My graduate degree is in conflict resolution and I also teach on this topic—both inner conflict with ourselves and outer conflict with others. Relationships bring a variety of issues and opportunities, and communication skills are vital for living and loving with others.

3. Emotional Regulation: Stress Management and Self Care
Stress, anxiety, depression and grief is very common today. It’s important to understand how emotional regulation works and to acquire good self management strategies to stabilise your emotional life.

4. Meaning and Purpose: Life Direction, Creativity and Calling
Another big area is meaning and purpose—exploring your life direction and how to follow your creativity and soul’s calling. Life can feel great when you’re being true to yourself and working for the right things in your life.

5. Transitions and Change: Crisis, Opportunity and Change
Moving from one situation to another—and dealing with everything that comes up along the way—is often a very powerful time in life. Crisis can be part of change, when things happen in a very chaotic or distressing way. Support can help you ride the wave of change and sort out how best to deal with it.

6. Supervision and Consulting: For Counsellors, Coaches, Consultants and Psychotherapists
It's important to receive safe and sensitive supervisory support for one's own work. I offer customised support and input, co-designed for your practitioner needs.

7. Writing and Leading: Workshops, Training and Facilitation
I also write books and facilitate workshops, seminars and retreats on a variety of topics.

Gemma Summers PhD
I've practiced as a counsellor and psychotherapist for over twenty years, and as a coach for the last ten. I enjoy being in a private practice as a unique opportunity and privilege to co-create results with people.

In my work, I've found that a flexible and integrative approach is the most effective way to create change. I use a variety of methods, including coaching, hypnotherapy, cognitive behaviour therapy, and mindfulness practices, along with innovative counselling and psychotherapy approaches to achieve results.

As each person is unique, they require an approach that is tailored to their specific needs and goals. Therefore I prefer to co-design a customised pathway for change with my clients.

My style is positive, holistic, integrative and inclusive of body, mind, and spirit. I undertake professional development every year and enjoy expanding my knowledge about human behaviour, performance, growth, health, and healing.

Increasingly I look to positive psychology and strengths-based approaches, along with mindfulness practices, to develop resilience and an increasing capacity for happiness, success, and fulfillment. There are so many wonderful resources available today that it really is possible to take charge of your health and wellbeing.

I've also worked for various organisations as a communication coach and learning and development educator, providing professional development opportunities for managers, from frontline to senior executive, as well as for non-management employees. Over the years, I've also facilitated numerous seminars and workshops across a range of personal and professional topics.

Writing is a passion, leading to my authoring the book, “How to Get What You Want Without Losing It: Women’s Guide to Resolving Conflict” (Random House Australia 2002). This positive and practical guide helps women deal with conflict in their lives, whether with partners, friends, family, or work colleagues. It's filled with strategies and exercises to help women acquire new skills. It's now available as an e-book on the products page of this website (COMING SOON).

I also wrote the weekly "Coaching Column," for The Age during 2003-4, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I'm currently engaged in producing a range of e-books and podcasts.
