Welcome to Green Apple Wellness Centre
Australian Fitness Facility of the Year 2006
Quest Business Achiever GOLD winner 2011 - Inducted into the HALL OF FAME
The Green Apple is a small, independent fitness centre with a focus on wellness. The primary objective is to provide a place where “non-gym” people can exercise in a fun, safe, and non-threatening environment.
The Green Apple opened it’s doors in 1978 and has developed into a club that has programmes for all age groups – from the young to the young at heart (Seniors). Our size allows the Centre to have a strong family feeling where laughter and happy voices echo and enduring friendships are made.
Our focus is on “wellness” which means we are asking you to come to us to feel healthier, even if you are not unwell by any normal medical standards: to feel stronger, slimmer, happier and more alert and fight the symptoms of ageing.
The Centre is registered with Fitness Australia and our experienced staff, representing all age groups and some who have been working at the Centre for more than 25 years, are fully qualified and registered. Their motto is “we love making meaningful changes in our members’ lives”.
Located in Bald Hills just up the road from the Bald Hills Train Station, Green Apple Wellness Centre specialises in exercise for osteoporosis, diabetes, arthritis, back pain and weight loss with exercises in the gym or in the pool.

Exercise Physiologist
A consultation with an Accredited Exercise Physiologist is a fantastic starting point for a healthier life with education, time management, physical activity and exercise prescription. However, an exercise physiologist alone is not enough for long term success. Achieving and maintaining optimal wellness is a mandatory and worthwhile ongoing commitment and investment in yourself.
The services offered at the Green Apple provide the perfect solution to sustainable physical activity choices. Group physical activities and regular programme reviews ensure compliance and adherence to physical activity in a fun, social and enjoyable setting.
At the Green Apple Wellness Centre we have Felicity Mears, Duncan Short and Alex Magee on staff who are Australian ESSA Accredited Exercise Physiologist. They are registered with Medicare Australia (bulk billed), the Department of Veterans Affairs (bulk billed) and has recognition among a number of health insurers.

Pilates
What is Pilates?
Pilates is a unique method of controlled exercise designed to strengthen and lengthen muscles, open up the joints and release tensions. Pilates is a form of controlled whole-body conditioning that produces a lean, lithe and optimally functional body.
At the Green Apple Wellness Centre you have a choice of two different forms of Pilates, Modern (Beginners/Intermediate)Pilates and Classical (Advanced) Pilates.
What is the difference between Modern and Classical Pilates?
Modern Pilates provides a safe option for beginners and people who have physical limitations. The movements have been “broken down” so they are manageable for almost everybody. As you progress and your stabilizing muscles increase their ability to function you will be able to attempt the more complex movements.
Who would benefit from Modern Pilates?
People with the following goals:- tone body
- increase strength
- increase flexibility
- help with back pain
- want to try Pilates for the first time
- rehabilitate injuries.
People with limitations such as:- biomechanical problems such as back etc.
- problems activating postural muscles
- poor posture or posture related issues
- bladder incontinence
- poor flexibility or range of movement.
Classical Pilates is a more exact version of Joseph Pilates strong movements
Classical Pilates is the way Joseph Pilates himself intended Pilates to be done. The exercises demand a moderate level of prior core stability and flexibility work. If you are a beginner this class is not for you but if you have done Pilates before and you are relatively strong then you will benefit from this class.
Who would benefit from Classical Pilates?
People with the following goals:- tone body
- increase flexibility
- increase strength.
Note: if you have never done Pilates, Modern Pilates is our recommended start point
A Members Story
Since being at the Green Apple for approximately 12 years I have learnt in that time that learning new fitness styles has become a regular ongoing process.
The latest being Pilates, which I see as aggravating as a mosquito bite, it never stops attracting my attention or my curiosity.
I have never become bored with Pilates, though at times I have not fully enjoyed a class mainly due to tiredness, mental distraction or just sheer laziness, but I still come back the next week and usually with a better state of mind.
Should anyone think that Pilates in not a grunt and groan activity and that they will not obtain any benefit, they will surely be surprised as it is just the same as the BP Petroleum Company "A quiet Achiever."

Power-Plate Training

The Power-Plate programme conducted in the Green Apple has been designed to provide safe, effective physical activity which has proven results.
Power-Plate is a machine with a platform which vibrates at a high frequency to initiate biomechanical muscle stimulation. During the 1970’s, Russian astronauts were able to stay four times longer in space with vibration training. With the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 knowledge of vibration training spread all over the world.
Since 1990, vibration training has been used by Olympic athletes to improve performance. There has also been significant medical research into the benefits of vibration training.
Benefits include:- Accelerated training time
- Improvements in bone density
- Increase in strength, especially legs (which is important in elderly people because of the strong correlation between poor leg strength and death).
- Increased vascular response
- Better balance
- Improved neuromuscular response
- Increased power
- Connective tissue stimulation
Power-Plate vibrations are multi-directional – up and down, backwards and forwards, side to side.
The amplitude of the vibration is the height the vibrating platform moving up and down. Amplitude is expressed as HIGH and LOW. When set on HIGH, the platform lifts to a greater height and this is why all beginner programmes are set using the lower amplitude, to allow the body to adjust to vibration training safely.
The progression of vibrations is the number of times the Power-Plate moves up and down. Frequency is expressed in Hz (e.g. 30Hz, 35Hz, or 50 Hz). Other settings can be achieved by using the “manual” method e.g. 25Hz can be set up manually. more >>

Trevor’s Story – "How I lost 80kg"
Arrived in the normal way (not hatched as some would suggest).
Overweight all my life by what I now believe was a combination of poor diet, poor eating habits and a lack of regular exercise.
By the time I was 15 years old I was 100 kg’s. As a child, Mum had me on all the diets etc. The doctor’s tried tablets to suppress my appetite but they tasted so bad I would eat and eat to get rid of the taste. At 15 I started in the railway (not my first choice but because of my size I was unable to get my chosen apprenticeship) Over the years my jobs became less labour intensive and my weight continued to increase with no medical problems except social acceptance. About 1995 I started to develop high blood pressure and it continued to climb. By 2001 I was on 3 tablets a day and still climbing. My GP said he believed I would be dead or worse a stroke within 12 months. He was recommending I see a surgeon for a complete stomach bypass but in the psychiatric evaluation it was considered I was a good candidate for Gastric banding, a less intrusive operation. George Fielding (the surgeon) said "Survive the operation and I will make you lose weight".
That statement brought me to the Green Apple for the first time. It took about a week to get up the courage to walk through the front door. Jason spoke to me and showed me around. I told him I was having the operation and needed all the help I could get to get through it. I explained he only had 6 weeks. Victoria and Jason drew up a program. I had a perfect operation (surgeon’s quote "text book procedure").My health fund approved 14 days in hospital but thanks to Dr Fielding and the gym I was home 21 hours after major stomach surgery. I was then on a liquid diet for 4 weeks, staples were out on day 10 and on day 14 I was back in the Green Apple. For the next 18 months my size reduced thanks to the surgery; my fitness and life slowly changed for the better thanks to the Green Apple and staff.
Then my job gave me the ultimate test, they asked me to go back to the old way which is 12 hours plus a day, 6 days a week. I can report after 6 months it is a failure. The money is great, but I miss the gym and the other exercise I was doing. Fortunately I had not put on any weight.
So back to the Green Apple, but as I was working 55 hours plus per week and I was depressed, Victoria suggested and explained the benefits of using a personal trainer. So poor Daniel then got the job of getting me on the way to making my goals happen. I explained to Dan that as I had not been able to go to the gym I had taken up bike riding to help with the weight loss and muscle toning. I loved the bike riding and was working on getting to 150 km per week, but with the hours I worked it was hard to achieve. I am aiming to achieve my personal goals for bike riding and other things, including the big one that in June at my annual check-up the surgeon will say that it’s time for some loose skin to go.
After some testing I am off and running (well after some cutting will be) with a full week of bike riding and 2 one-hour weight sessions that Dan has manipulated around my work. Dan’s encouragement even when I don’t what to be at the gym has got me back on the way to where I want to go now. After some weeks I can see some changes happening; the belt is in a couple of holes, the mental motivation is coming back. I now am looking forward to each session to see if I can better the last effort and with the help of Dan as a personal trainer I continue to learn the correct way to perform each exercise and I learn why I am doing that exercise. With a personal trainer I can push myself to the max, knowing that I am doing the exercises correctly, allowing me to achieve my goals and under Dan’s instruction these goals will be achieved.
The use of the personal trainer is one of the more satisfying parts of my new life as I am not just exercising for my improved health but I am learning as well.
At 40 years old, I’m lighter and fitter than I was at 15!
