Western-style Shiatsu, Massage & Reiki, with Sarah Najjar
Shiatsu
Shiatsu translates as "finger pressure" in Japanese. It is a holistic healing system based on the principle that energy moves throughout your body through energy pathways known as meridians. Shiatsu is able to treat a range of conditions ranging from muscular pain to menstrual difficulties, digestive conditions to anxiety. During a treatment your circulation is stimulated, your nervous system relaxes and your hormonal system can re-balance
Reiki
Reiki is a gentle hands-n treatment that promotes your optimum health and wellbeing by increasing your energy levels and decreasing pain and tension. Reiki helps restore you to a state of balance by unlocking your body's natural healing abilities and is effective in treating physical pain and well as emotional conditions such as grief, anxiety and depression

Cupping
Sarah also offers Cupping
Traditional-style Shiatsu, with Chloe Twohig
A traditional shiatsu treatment begins with an in-depth diagnosis using Chinese Medicine diagnostic tools such as an examination of the tongue, pulse, along with gathering information concerning lifestyle, diet, general well-being and emotions. Shiatsu aims to restore an optimal state of balance and health, and the treatment involves a combination of hand, palm, elbow or perhaps foot pressure, stretching, percussion (rapid tapping), cupping and guasha (a traditional technique using the edge of a spoon). Shiatsu can greatly assist and resolve aches, pains, injuries, energy imbalances, insomnia, stress, pregnancy & post-natal related issues and headaches. It can also simply be a wonderful form of pampering and relaxation!
A traditional shiatsu is conducted on a futon mattress on the floor, fully clothed. Please wear loose comfortable clothing. Initial consults are 75 minutes. Subsequent sessions, 60 minutes
Cupping, with Nadine Teffaha
Cupping is the modern term for an ancient medical treatment (~3,500 years old). It is a method by which various acupuncture points are stimulated by applying suction, through a glass jar for example, in which a partial vacuum has been created. The cups encourage blood flow and may mark your skin. These marks are not painful and disappear within one to seven days. The drawing effect is both relieving and comforting. Cupping dispenses stagnation, encourages blood and lymph flow allowing the body to be energized, strengthened and detoxified. Cupping has been used successfully to alleviate the symptoms of ailments such as the common cold, musculoskeletal and abdominal pains.
Nadine also offers Thai Massage for women.
OTHER ALLIED HEALTH SERVICES
Naturopathy,NutritionandDietaryAdvice&HerbalMedicine, with Ayesha Amos
Naturopathy
Naturopathy is a holistic health care system that acknowledges, identifies and treats the causes of a disease instead of the symptoms. The whole person is treated through a variety of modalities such as herbal medicine, nutrition, diet and lifestyle modifications
Nutrition and Dietary Advice
Nutritional medicine is the use of practitioner quality supplements or dietary modifications to correct deficiencies or treat disease states. Healthy eating is also emphasised.
Herbal Medicine
Herbal medicines are sourced from medicinal plants and are prescribed in the form of liquid extracts, teas, powders or tablets. Herbal medicine is the oldest form of medicine and has been practiced by many cultures throughout the world for thousands of years. It is still the most widely used form of medicine today.
Flower Essence Therapy, with Allison Ross
Flower Essence Therapy takes its form as a counselling session wherein the therapist supports and facilitates the client via a therapeutic exchange of dialogue. The direction the client would like to take to work towards a resolution of the issues that are presented is then determined. The therapist works intuitively honing in on key words and phrases that will provide clues to the specific flower essences that aim to unlock the client's own abilities to heal these areas of concern. A selection of flower essences is made, that when mixed together will create a symbiotic path of healing tailored to the individual needs of the client. The experience is often one of deep inward investigation, a shifting of negative thoughts and behaviour, followed by insight and clarity. The intensity of this work can be tempered by lowering the frequency of the dose and can be assisted by other natural therapy modalities and exercises.

Homeopathy, with Nadine Teffaha
Homeopathy
Our body is very intelligent. It is constantly capable of maintaining balance and harmony in all its systems and on all levels of its expression. However, there are times in our lives when certain challenges create stress which can affect the fine balance that exists within us. It is at these times of disharmony and imbalance that homeopathic medicine can be a great support.
The homeopathic medicine is chosen to stimulate the body’s innate ability for self-healing in order to restore vitality and health. Homeopathy is a safe, gentle and effective complementary medicine. It is suitable for all ages and at any stage of life. Every stage in life brings its gains and its challenges both physically and emotionally. Homeopathic treatment eases the impact of these challenges whether it is given on its own or as an adjuvant to other complementary or conventional treatments.
Osteopathy, with Sally Walshe
Osteopathy is a 'whole body' system of manual therapy that treats each individual uniquely. While treating the musculo-skeletal system, osteopathy also addresses the circulatory, neurological, visceral and endocrine systems.

Life Coaching with Emma Dabb
Have you ever felt stuck or confused about what you should do?
Have you ever wanted to achieve a new level of success in an area of your life that is already working for you?
Life coaching is about working with someone who wants to achieve more in their life. A professional life coach assists the client in closing the gap between where they are and where they want to be. This is achieved through assisting the client to discover what is important to them, what is missing from their life and identifying what outcomes they are seeking. It’s about the coach asking questions, listening, reflecting back what they hear and challenging the client’s thinking to enable them to think about new ways to create the transformation they are looking for.
Clients achieve the outcomes they are seeking faster and more effortlessly through working with a professional life coach.
COUNSELLING SERVICES AT HARTINGTON Psychotherapy, Psychology and Counselling
In times of uncertainty and change, psychotherapists, psychologists and counsellors can assist us to work with the various challenges life invariably presents. The confidential and respectful nature of the counselling relationship creates a safe context in which to begin the process of getting in touch with what our needs and to truly experience our feelings. We come to an understanding of what is getting in the way of our achieving a sense of well-being, while learning more helpful ways of relating and of being in the world.
The therapeutic experience is
‘At this very moment you might be struggling with problems, big or small. You may be feeling confused, sad, angry or alone in some way. You might be concerned about someone you love, or simply keen to take more control over your life so that you can start living in a way that feels more complete. Whatever it is that you are going though, or wishing for, I promise you something: your life will become easier if you allow yourself the help of others from time to time.’

Things to consider when choosing a counsellor
Psychotherapy,PsychologyandCounselling ~ What it’s all about?
It can be difficult to make a succinct distinction between psychology, counselling and psychotherapy. However, it is probably fair to say that psychology and counselling tends to be shorter-term, solution-focused work as their aim is to provide skills and strategies for the relief or cessation of symptoms. Psychologists and counsellors generally employ a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy approach which is to say that they challenge and aim to modify the ways our thoughts affect our emotional wellbeing. Some psychologists may also offer psychotherapy if they have undergone further studies
Psychotherapy is different to psychology and counselling in that it aims to address the causes underlying the symptoms, that is to say, the reasons why the symptoms appeared in the first place. Therefore psychotherapy is often longer-term work, as the therapist’s role is to help the client gain a genuine understanding of the causes of distress or unhappiness and the impact on their lives and the lives of others, whilst challenging the unhelpful ways that we are currently responding to the stresses in our lives. It is through the growing awareness and appreciation of our underlying and sometimes unconscious material that we begin to heal and blossom
Qualifications
Academic qualifications are by no means the full story but they certainly help! Appropriate training can ensure that the therapist or counsellor you choose has a deep understanding of the theoretical and experiential nature of their particular field of counselling. Accordingly, your counsellor will most likely be a member of a recognised counselling associatio
Does the counsellor belong to a recognised counselling association?
Without a personal recommendation from a friend or other health professional it can be tricky deciding who to see. Because choosing a counsellor can be a daunting task it is worth checking to see whether the psychotherapist, psychologist or counsellor is affiliated with a recognised counselling association. Checking out their association (via one of the search engines) you will quickly discover the counsellor or therapist’s level of training and experience, as each association has different levels of membership according to the therapist’s years of training, experience, supervision and professional development. These associations help ensure that you are receiving a high standard of professionalism, experience and accountability. This kind of information offers reassurance when it comes to selecting a counsellor!
Rapport
The relationship with your counsellor is going to be the most important factor when choosing a counsellor / therapist. Obviously relationships take time to grow. However, for the work to be productive you need to feel a positive connection with your counsellor (even if you are initially somewhat anxious!) Empathy, positive regard, good listening ability and skill are the essential ingredients of a good counsellor that will assist you in feeling safe and supported.
Setting
It's important to feel comfortable with the setting and environment. Does the counsellor's room ensure privacy? Is it aesthetically pleasing to you? Can you relax?
Your first contact with a Practitioner
Feel free to spend a few minutes talking to a prospective counsellor or therapist. You may want to ask about their qualifications, experience, approach, availability and fees. The counsellor may ask you to briefly describe the issues or concerns you have, to make sure she or he is the best person for you. Already you are gaining a sense of each other. The first consultation will be another opportunity to ask questions and to gauge more fully whether you wish to pursue a counselling or therapeutic relationship with this practitioner.
Fees
The Hartington Centre is not a government–run organisation which means we don’t receive funding. Therefore our therapists work independently by setting their own fees. However, if you are experiencing financial difficulty, practitioners will sometimes negotiate their fees so please feel free to discuss this.
Medicare offer a cost-effective means of acquiring short-term counselling via a GP’s referral to access the Better Access to Mental Health Care plan. You pay your psychologist their full fee at the time of your consultation then take the invoice to Medicare to claim your rebate.
Please note: The Mental Health Care plan is only available to individuals experiencing a mental health illness (depression, anxiety, personality disorder, etc). Your GP will make this assessment at the time of your consultation.
In accordance with the plan’s criteria, the psychologist or social worker will utilise a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy
or solution-focused counselling model in his or her treatment of your condition.
Relationship Counselling: As most relationship issues don’t fall under the category of mental-health disorders the Mental Health Care plan is not available for the majority of couples seeking relationship counselling. Usually, relationship issues have an interpersonal and relational basis so need to be addressed as such by a qualified relationship counsellor However if one of the couple is experiencing a mental-health disorder it may then be possible for the couple to access the Mental Health Plan.
Psychotherapists are not funded by private health insurance companies or by Medicare at this point in time (despite equivalent or greater levels of qualifications and experience). Unfortunately this means that we cannot offer rebates. However, we are happy to discuss a reduction in fees were deemed appropriate.
