SERVICES
Welcome

Harley House Osteopathy is a renowned centre for quality holistic health-care, located in the Melbourne CBD.

Established in 1999, the clinic's reputation has been built upon providing effective treatment for musculoskeletal conditions including back pain and sports injuries.

At Harley House Osteopathy, we are committed to assisting our patients in their journey toward better health and pain-free mobility.

Osteopathy

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopaths are primary health-care providers, which means that you don’t need a general practitioner’s referral to see an osteopath. Osteopaths are qualified to perform a thorough physical examination and to recognise the signs of pathological processes, and to provide appropriate referrals when necessary.
Osteopaths specialise in manual therapy for the treatment of a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders. Osteopathic treatment focuses on improving the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system.
Because osteopaths use hands-on techniques, pain relief is often immediate.

Techniques used to achieve this include:
  • Soft tissue massage/counterstrain to release areas of muscle tightness and address trigger points.
  • Muscle energy techniques (or PNF techniques) which are used to normalise the resting Length of muscles, and to improve joint movement.
  • Gentle manipulation in order to restore normaL joint range of movement.
  • Articulation/mobilisation (gentle, passive movements) in order to improve the quality and range of joint movement.
  • Exercise prescription for rehabilitation (as an adjunct to “hands on” techniques).
  • Postural and ergonomic advice.

Conditions Treated
Osteopathy is useful in the management of many conditions, including:
  • back pain
  • neck pain
  • headaches & migraines
  • joint pain
  • tennis elbow
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • indigestion
  • hiatus hernia
  • menstrual disorders
  • constipation
  • asthma
  • “RSI” type complaints
  • sports injuries
  • post-op mobility
  • Chronic pain conditions

Hands on treatment means that most people will experience some level of pain relief/increased mobility immediately after the initial visit.

Your First Visit

In your first appointment, your osteopath WILL take a thorough case history which Will include detailed questions about the site and nature of your pain, and also your general medical history.

At Harley House Osteopathy we allow one hour for the initial consultation. This ensures that you have the opportunity to discuss with us any questions you may have about your treatment, and that you are able to provide us with information about your complaint and medical history in a relaxed and unhurried environment.

Following discussion of the diagnosis and treatment plan, a brief physical examination will be performed.

Depending on your symptoms, this may include neurological examination, measurement of blood pressure, and orthopaedic testing. If any signs of pathological conditions are present, you will be referred appropriately.

You Osteopath will then assess your posture, check the amount and quality of movement at different joints, and identify any areas of muscular tightness.

Treatment is the focused upon restoring normal joint movement and muscle tone/function.

Practitioners

Osteopathy is a government-regulated form of primary health-care. Registration as an osteopath requires the completion of a full-time 5 year university degree at a government-approved university.

Training involves the study of many different areas of science and health-care - including the basic sciences, dermatology, microbiology, pathology, neuroanatomy and obstetrics/paediatrics - in addition to musculoskeletal diagnosis and treatment. Osteopaths are given the title ‘doctor’ as they are seen as specialists in manual therapy for musculoskeletal conditions.

In addition to government registration, all osteopaths at Harley House Osteopathy are members of the Australian Osteopathic Association, and committed to the maintenance of the highest ethical standards.

Kristy is a founding partner of Harley House Osteopathy. She graduated in 1999 from RMIT University, and in addition to private practice also appreciates the academic aspects of her role as an independent medical examiner.

She enjoys the fact that a CBD- based practice provides the opportunity to treat a wide variety of conditions, and has a special interest in the area of chronic pain management.

When not at work, Kristy is often found reading, eating pasta or drinking a glass of red wine (only for
the antioxidants).

David is a founding partner of Harley House Osteopathy. He graduated from RMIT University in 1999 and, working predominantly in private practice, also has a keen interest in sports medicine.

He has been involved with Victorian Premier League football teams, and was the osteopath for the Australian Taekwondo Team in 2007, the Australian Olympic Taekwondo Team at the Olympic qualifiers in Manchester and New Caledonia in 2007 and in the lead-up to the Beijing Games. His involvement with sport at the elite level has led to further research in areas such as rehabilitation, training methods and nutrition.

Outside of his osteopathic interests, David enjoys cycLing, playing indoor soccer and is an avid movie goer.
