SERVICES WELCOME TO JULIE DURLAK'S NATUROPATHIC SITE
Julie is qualified with a Naturopathic Degree (ND) and registered at the National level with ANTA (Australian Natural Therapists Association). She has been in practice, in Geelong, full time since 2003.
WHAT IS NATUROPATHY?
Naturopathy is one of the oldest forms of medicine where a naturopathic practitioner follows the "laws of nature" to help strengthen the body and allow it to heal itself. These naturopathy principles include:
* Ensuring each person feels physically, mentally and emotionally well
* Incorporating a diet rich in nutritious wholesome foods in their natural state
* Ensuring adequate elimination of body wastes (toxins)
* Being aware of hereditary factors and supporting these body systems
* Reducing destructive emotions and suppressive drugs
* Receiving adequate exercise, relaxation, fresh air, sunlight and good quality sleep
* Minimising environmental pollutants
* Using natural medicines which encourage healing and toning rather than suppressing symptoms
* Drinking good quality water and other fluids which cleanse the body
A naturopath's aim is to identify the cause of any illness and help the body to eliminate it which will restore the body's balance.
JULIE'S BACKGROUND
Since primary school Julie always knew she wanted to help heal and educate people. She did voluntary work with St John Ambulance for over 14 years from the age of 14 and contributed more than 3,000 hours doing voluntary first aid at public events in both Geelong and Melbourne. Julie left St John Ambulance to fully devote her time towards her naturopathy studies. She completed her four-year degree in Melbourne at Southern School of Natural Therapies (Australia's longest running and most respected naturopathic college). Julie is extremely passionate about the work she does and is continuously furthering her knowledge on naturopathy and health related issues through professional seminars and further reading / research. Julie has been in full time practice as a naturopath since 2003 and runs her own clinic in the Geelong suburb Highton. Julie also teaches for 3 hours per week as a naturopathic & first aid lecturer in Geelong at the Gordon Institute of Tafe. Julie works full time in her practice around her teaching schedule.
JULIE'S APPROACH
"All natural in a manageable way"“
Julie is particularly focused on providing a high quality and affordable naturopathic treatment. She takes the principles of naturopathy and combines them with a treatment plan that will be effective for each patient in a manageable way. She also understands the pressures of modern day life, lack of nutritional properties in foods that are available, marketing strategies used by companies to entice sales of their food and products and from this gives each patient the correct knowledge of what is "actually" required for good health.
Julie loves the educational side of naturopathy and seeing each patient delight in learning about themselves.
"Julie is an extremely thorough naturopath. I've been seeing her for five years now, when required, and am delighted I found her. She has such extensive knowledge and I always walk out of her clinic feeling positive and informed. She has great professionalism and is so very caring in her approach. I greatly appreciate that she really listens to me and doesn't just treat me like a number." Yvonne, Newcomb.
Patients are encouraged to bring in a thorough history of all past medical complaints and medications that have and/or are being taken. Patients will also be asked about diet and exercise and effective recommendations provided. Other factors will be analysed such as how to optimise each patient’s health and the monitoring of factors such as blood pressure and blood test results (eg. cholesterol levels) to return the body into its balanced state.
Julie welcomes all naturopathic enquiries!
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A CONSULTATION?
Consultations involve a variety of components:
The initial consultation informs the naturopath about a patient's health history and susceptibility or possible weaknesses that need strengthening. The naturopath will ask a lot of varied questions about factors such as past illnesses, energy levels, stress, sleep and medications taken.
Diet is assessed for nutritional intake and exercise and other factors assessed for the effectiveness of body eliminations.
An iridology assessment gives insight into a patient's general constitution and has been shown to be effective in pinpointing areas of weakness.
Medical assessments may also be taken such as pulse, blood pressure, assessing breathing capacity, listening to heart, lung and bowel sounds, general physical assessments and ear and eye examinations.
Lifestyle counselling and providing emotional reassurance may often be a large part of treatment also. Confidentiality and a caring nature are assured.
CONDITIONS TREATED
Julie commonly treats the following:
WOMENS HEALTH: Fertility, pregnancy health and nutrition, recurrent miscarriages, menopause, PCOS, endometriosis, period pain, breast pain, hormonal imbalances, menstrual irregularity and more
MENS HEALTH: Fertility, prostate health and more
GENERAL HEALTH: Depression, stress management, low energy, migrainnes, headaches, recurrent cold / flu prevention, low immunity, cancer, digestive complaints, skin conditions, pain, anxiety, detox programs, acne, sinus congestion, allergies, brittle nails, arthritis, wound healing, diabetes dietary management, infections, effective vegetarian / vegan health and more
Julie treats most conditions. Referral for medical advice will be recommended where blood tests or medical examinations are required.
Julie also treats most animals naturopathically too, including dogs, cats and horses and has had very successful results.
"Before going to Julie, (my dog) Saxon (at age 1) was unable to run 10 metres without being breathless and nearly collapsing and the vet said he would probably have a short little life as he had a hole in his heart. I had to do something. Julie was understanding and very positive. Within 2 weeks of starting (herbal and nutritional) treatment we noticed a vast improvement. He was so much stronger and happier and "the wobbles" had gone, even the vet was impressed, especially by his blood test results. Saxon is now 4 years old and going really well. I highly recommend her to anyone thinking of natural therapies for themselves or their animals to give it a try - we were AMAZED!" Anne Norrie, Hamlyn Heights
NATURAL MEDICINE DISPENSARY
HERBAL MEDICINE - Julie has thorough training and dispensing experience in treating with both liquid extracted and dried herbal medicines (teas). Herbs are complete products unlike pharmaceuticals (which have only one component extracted for use). By using whole and natural products, there is often less likelihood for side effects to occur. Each herb has several different actions within the body and with Julie's extensive training in herbal medicine she can select from her dispensary range of over one hundred different liquid herbs to specifically tailor your herbal mix and prevent you from having to take several different products (as could be the case where tablets are already pre-prepared in a "one for all" approach).
NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS - Are you lacking certain minerals or vitamins? Are you absorbing the nutrients in your diet? Julie assesses your diet thoroughly to see if you may be deficient in any macro or micro nutrients. If so, she will advise a patient on what nutritional changes can be made to rectify the deficiency and if needed will prescribe the nutrient required until the deficiency is corrected.
HOMOEOPATHICS - Homoeopathics work energetically, emotionally and physically to rebalance the body. Julie can make up an individually tailored cream incorporating homoeopathics, herbs and flower essences (or a combination thereof) E.g. Arnica homoeopathic and rescue remedy flower essence, plus appropriate herbs, in a rich vitamin E based cream - for swelling and bruising.
FLOWER ESSENCES - These work well to rebalance emotions and are extracted from different flowers. Each flower essence has a unique healing effect and Julie will choose from approximately 100 essences that she stocks to improve any emotional upset. Julie stocks the "Californian FES" and the complete "Bach Flower" range.
TISSUE SALTS - The body is primarily composed of twelve minerals. If any of these minerals are low, a specific set of symptoms may appear (eg. low natrum phos causes excess acid conditions - eg. gout or arthritis). Therefore correcting these mineral deficiencies may help to rebalance and eliminate symptoms and disease.
AROMATHERAPY - Aromatherapy blends are made by Julie for use by the patient. Common examples are oil blends for muscular aches, childrens hair blends for lice removal, cream blends, uplifting blends for depression / anxiety or sleep blends to promote relaxation for insomnia.
EAR CANDLING - Hollow ear candles (similar to a thick 20cm straw) made of honey, bees wax and herbs are marginally inserted into the ear. This provides warmth and a slight vacuum which loosens and withdraws ear wax into a collecting point of the candle and restabilises inner ear pressure. It is suitable for vertigo, sinus conditions, migrainne, headache and removing excessive ear wax. This therapy has been used by American Indians for centuries and Julie teams the experience with traditional American Indian music playing in the background whilst delivering the therapy. The cost for Ear Candling is $50 (or $45 for concession card holders) which includes the price of the two ear candles (one for each ear) and takes approximately 40 minutes.
"I tried ear candling with Julie and found that it cleared both ears and helped clear my sinuses out. My head and sinuses felt lighter and clearer straight after the therapy. The clinic location was good and easy to find. Excellent service provided." Damian, Bell Post Hill

"I look forward to meeting you and working together with you on optimising your health and helping you to feel better within yourself and achieve any goal that you truly desire. There's nothing more rewarding than seeing a patient feel better than they ever have before or helping in ways such as assisting women to get pregnant when nothing has worked in the past and knowing I've helped bring about a new life, when nothing else that they'd tried to date has worked . All enquiries are welcome with no obligation to book in." Regards, Julie Durlak
