Welcome - I'm glad you stopped by.

Sometimes, we get overwhelmed by problems that seem almost outside our control.

I know, from talking to people, that addiction to tobacco, particularly for those who have been heavy long-term smokers, breaking that addiction can, at times, seem impossible. I was motivated to train in Hypnotherapy by my own experience of being addicted to cigarette smoking and then being able to become a non-smoker after being treated with Hypnotherapy.

Another major motivation was the memory of carrying my own father from my car into his own home. We had returned for one last visit with my mother before going back to the Hospice where he was being treated for terminal cancer of the lungs. My father had been a heavy smoker for all his adult life. He passed away five days later, in 1986, at the Hospice, with his family present. Since then, my work in Glen Waverley and in Melbourne, helping smokers to quit, has brought me great pleasure.

I like to think, that every time I help someone become a non-smoker, there is a small smile of approval from somewhere distant.

About Me
Some twenty years ago I was a 40-60 a-day smoker, working for a large multinational computer company.

I was no stranger to giving up smoking. As Mark Twain once said: giving up smoking is easy, I've done it thousands of times!

However, having tried and failed many attempts and seeing my health deteriorate I came across an advertisement for treatment by Hypnosis.

I made an appointment.

After the first one-hour session I tossed my cigarettes and lighter into a bin and walked out a non-smoker That first session was followed by two more reinforcement sessions. Since then I've had no desire to smoke - even when surrounded by smokers puffing away.

I was so impressed by the result, that immediately afterwards, I trained in Hypnotherapy at the only course recognised by the Victoria Government - eventually becoming a Qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist.

I now treat problems other than smoking, however, smoking remains a major focus for me due to the undoubted physical damage it causes to those caught by its addiction.

There is not one therapeutic approach to fit all - individuals vary. A crucial part of my therapy is to use an approach aligned to the individual needs of each client.

Hypnosis
In 2001, the Professional Affairs Board of the British Psychological Society (BPS) commissioned a working party of expert psychologists to publish a report entitled The Nature of Hypnosis. Its remit was 'to provide a considered statement about hypnosis and important issues concerning its application and practice in a range of contexts, notably for clinical purposes, forensic investigation, academic research, entertainment and training.' The report provided a concise (c. 20 pages) summary of the current scientific research on hypnosis. It opened with the following introductory remark:

"Hypnosis is a valid subject for scientific study and research and a proven therapeutic medium."

With regard to the therapeutic uses of hypnosis, the report said:

"Enough studies have now accumulated to suggest that the inclusion of hypnotic procedures may be beneficial in the management and treatment of a wide range of conditions and problems encountered in the practice of medicine, psychiatry and psychotherapy."

FAQ's

Frequently asked questions

Misconceptions about hypnosis abound. Many fallacies can be traced back to the unfortunate early use of comedy hypnosis as a form of entertainment on stage and television. Following are some typical questions that previous clients have asked - I find them quite natural - and you may find they answer some of your own questions.

Q. Who can be hypnotized?

Anyone with reasonable intelligence can be hypnotized - excluding very young children.

Q. Am I sleeping?

In fact, it is just the opposite - a hypnotized person is wide awake. All of your senses are enhanced. It is closer to a state of day-dreaming or relaxing.

Q. Can I get stuck in hypnosis?

No, the hypnotic state can be terminated at any time you choose. It is your choice to enter hypnosis and your choice to leave it.

Q. Will I tell you any deep ... dark ... secrets?

Not unless you want to. It is not a truth serum.

Q. Is hypnosis dangerous?

No, it is no more dangerous than sitting in a recliner, watching television. The only side effect will be that you will be very relaxed afterwards.

Q. What is the difference between Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis has been around for thousands of years. Hypnotherapy is simply therapy which uses hypnosis as a powerful tool to facilitate change. It is used worldwide.

Q. Will I be in control and aware of what is happening?

Yes, all the time. You do not go 'out', 'under' or 'to sleep'. You are not unconscious. You are in an alternate state of consciousness with a very narrow focus of attention. You can hear everything that is being said. Nothing happens without your consent.

Q. Will I remember what happens during the sessions?

Yes, people remember everything they or the therapist said during the session. It is possible for the therapist to give a post-hypnotic suggestion to forget what was said but this is rarely used in therapy.

Q. Will the therapist have to touch me?

Some therapists will touch you on the wrist, shoulder, neck or forehead to test whether you are properly relaxed or to assist you into a deeper state of hypnosis. They will seek your permission first. Other than this form of contact, a therapist has no business touching you. The vast majority of therapists are ethical, and transgressions are very rare.

Q. How many sessions will I need?

Problems such as smoking may only require two or three sessions of approximately 30-40 minutes. More deeply rooted problems may require more sessions.

Q. Will I do anything against my will?

No, you will not do anything that you do not think is acceptable or against your nature. You cannot be made to violate your own values or accepted patterns of behaviour. You will hear everything that is said. You are in complete control at all times.
