Inner Health Osteopathy
What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a system of health care that treats body parts such as joints, muscles, ligaments and connective tissue using several “hands on” techniques. Treatment aims include increasing the quality and range of motion in joints, treating muscular contractions following period of immobility and breaking down scar tissue caused by trauma. These treatments help the functioning of the whole body via the circulatory, nervous and lymphatic systems. Osteopaths are trained to manually locate and identify points of excessive strain or restriction in the body. To do so, the osteopath uses a fine sense of palpation to assess the spine, muscles, joints and tendons. Osteopaths can also refer patients for a spinal x-ray if need be, to confirm a finding or diagnosis.
What do Osteopaths treat?
Osteopaths most commonly treat musculoskeletal conditions such as:
• Postural and mobility problems
• Joint pain (including shoulder, elbow, wrist & hand, hip, knee, ankle, foot)
• Back and neck pain
• Sports injuries
• Repetitive strain injury (RSI)
Osteopaths may also assist with symptomatic relief of other conditions such as:
• Arthritis
• Headaches
• Sciatica
• Asthma
• Symptoms caused by pregnancy
• Neuralgia and tension
• Disc prolapse or herniation
Osteopaths don't only aim to treat symptoms, but more importantly, they focus on treating the cause. Osteopaths also work on training you to help take care of your body. This is achieved through ergonomic advice, stress management strategies and exercise programs.
A Typical Consultation
The initial consultation with an osteopath will consist of taking a complete medical history through which the osteopath will ask questions about your lifestyle and medication, presenting symptoms and any past accidents, surgery or trauma. This will be followed by some orthopaedic and neurological testing where indicated, to help the osteopath eliminate possible underlying pathologies and to reach a final diagnosis. Finally, the osteopath will discuss the diagnosis with you and commence a tailored treatment program immediately.
In a return consultation, the osteopath will begin by noting any change in your symptoms since the initial presenting complaint. After doing so, the osteopath may ask you to perform some simple motions through which they will compare your state to that of the initial consultation and check that your progress is as expected. The osteopath will then commence the treatment that they see most suitable.
