About Counselling
Counselling is a place to express yourself in a safe and supportive space. It offers a way to gain clarity on and work through areas of your life that are troubling you. You may be aware of a clear specific issue, or you may not be sure why you are experiencing troublesome thoughts and feelings.
My role as counsellor
I am not personally involved in your life; it is my role to listen without making judgments and to bring a fresh perspective to your concerns. Sometimes we can hold harsh expectations for ourselves, or for others.
My role involves assisting you to understand and manage the various types of stress that impact on your personal life. Some of the stress we experience is triggered by external events, such as work issues or loss of a relationship. Another form of stress is painful thoughts and feelings; including guilt or resentment, limiting beliefs about the self, or perfectionism.
Couple Counselling
Couple counselling challenges unhelpful ways you relate to each other and can assist you to experiment with new, more helpful ways of relating. Counselling is a place to explore how you think, feel and react; a space that allows you to recognise and understand patterns that create distress in your relationship. Therapy is also about locating and building upon the strengths and resources in your relationship – this may require reflection to an earlier time in your relationship.
You may be seeking help for a number of reasons including:
- Communication issues such as hurtful arguments, or a sense that issues get “swept under the carpet”
- Belief that you are growing apart or feeling less connected than you once were
- Recovery from infidelity
- Managing reactivity to past hurt.
