about massage and remedial therapy
A remedial massage is the umbrella for many different techniques such as deep tissue massage, ischemic compression, myofascial release, muscle energy technique, sports and exercise therapy, lymphatic drainage massage just to mention a few. The aim of these different techniques varies:
- Deep tissue strokes and cross fiber techniques may increase the blood circulation to the area and separate the muscle fibers
- Ischemic compression is used to remove trigger points
- Myofascial release to decrease tension in the fascia covering the muscle and stretch it
- Lymphatic drainage massage to assist in removing excess fluid in the tissue
- Muscle energy technique aims to increase joints range of movement
My massage always involves relaxation to overcome tissue resistance and to adhere to the principle of working from superficial to deep before carrying out specific remedial work on the area of complaint. To tell you which technique is more important than the other is quite difficult as their aims are specific – so they are incorporated in the massage as required.
about lymphoedema
Lymphoedema is a long term, chronic swelling of an area of the body due to a compromised lymphatic system: i.e. obstruction, damage, genetic malformation or removal of lymph nodes in the lymphatic system. Lymphoedema is also called “Low Flow/High Protein Oedema” because of the accumulation of proteins in the tissue.
Lymphoedema is usually accompanied by feelings of heaviness, aching, weakness in the area and decrease in range of movement..
Lymphoedema can have a significant impact on someone’s quality of life and personal ability to care about themselves, the family and work. There is no cure for lymphoedema but it can be controlled with good management.
lymphoedema - treatment
Early detection of Lymphoedema means early treatment, which decreases Lymphoedema impact on health and finance and improves quality of life, as it may consists in wearing a compression garment only.
The conventional treatment of severe lymphoedema is Complex Lymphatic Therapy (CLT), which can produce outstanding outcomes. The initial phase of the treatment is intense. A lymphatic drainage massage followed by bandaging is performed daily for the duration of 7 to 10 days to obtain a significant reduction in the size of the limb prior to fitting the patient with a compression garment.
According to a recent study, a reduction in lymphoedema achieved from a single course of CLT can be successfully maintained for 5 years without further treatment provided the patient is compliant with a proper self-care program.

The initial phase of the treatment can be quite intense. Lymphatic drainage massage followed by bandaging is performed daily for the duration of 7 to 10 days to obtain a significant reduction in the size of the limb. This is actually the easy part of the treatment, and the hardest part consists of complying to a self-care program. However, according to a recent study, a reduction in lymphoedema achieved from a single course of CLT can be successfully maintained for 5 years without further treatment provided the patient is compliant with a proper self-care program.
A self-care program includes wearing a compression garment daily and for some bandaging at night to maintain the limb reduction, exercise, self manual lymphatic drainage, deep abdominal breathing, and good skin care routine to avoid infection in the affected limb.
