Meditation
For along time the idea of meditation has scared people. How on earth am I going to switch off my thoughts and sit in a place of quiet? Shutting of the thoughts and being completely quiet is the misconception. It is perfecfly normal for your conscious mind to think, so to expect that you will close your eyes, sit cross legged on the floor, chant OM, and your mind will be quiet, is not what meditation is all about. Meditation is a journey that changes each time we visit it. Meditation allows us a place of refuge, a space to connect with our true being and to tap into higher wisdom for guidance, answers, acceptance and love.
As a meditation teacher I help people to discover their inner sanctuary. The common thread I find with everyone is that we all crave a deep connection with ourselves and life, and the best way I know of feeling this is to sit quietly and go within. Thoughts will always come up and when they do we choose what to do with them.
- Notice your thought and decide that you would like to think about that later. Tell your thought "I will come back to you after meditation", let it go for now and return your focus to your breath.
- Decide that the thought is not relevant to you. It's someone else's problem and you are allowed to let them solve it. Give the ownership back to them and return to observing your breath.
- Recognise that you cannot solve this problem by yourself, you have been trying and nothing works. This thought fills your head and your sick of it. This is when you need to ask for guidance and support. Offer the thought to Life/ The universe/God, and ask them to solve the problem for you. With faith know that your answer will come, let go and return to your breath.
Gradually our thoughts are filed away like a filing system and in their place we experience some calm. In that calm we experience a connection with our higher self. That place within us all that is perfect and loves us unconditionally. And when life gets a bit hectic, it's nice to have a place to go which is all yours and perfect.

Relaxation
A full body relaxation in the yoga world is known as yoga nidra. A time when the body becomes so relaxed that the physical shuts down and rests, the organs go into sleep mode and the body feels like it has melted through the earth. The mind becomes quiet and your soul can recharge and connect fully into the power of the universe for restoration and fulfillment.
The best way to experience full body relaxation is to follow a guided CD or attend a relaxation class.
Many of my mum clients tell me how they use relaxation when they need some time out from the kids. As soon as nap time comes, they throw on my CD and experience half hour of rest. Studies have shown that 20 minutes of relaxation is equivalent to 3 hours rest. The mums then return to parenting duties, rested and with a clear head. Ready to tackle the afternoon with a peaceful outlook. Other clients tell me that they use relaxation to go to sleep. Especially when they have a busy mind, relaxation helps to take the focus away from the thoughts and muscle by muscle, cell by cell the body shuts down into rest mode. Priceless.
